Introduction & questions from NH
Greetings!
I'm a new member from NH with ties to Clan MacLachlan, and in the
grip of new-to-kilt excitement. This may be a familiar story...
My nephews have been wearing kilts for a while, so the idea
wasn't strange to me, but I hadn't taken the plunge until a couple
of weeks ago when I decided to try a kilt for hiking. Bought a SWK
Thrifty -- not the most elegant garment, but my wife thought I
looked smashing, and how could I resist that smile? It was off to the
computer for more research. I sewed down the pleats on the Thrifty
-- a huge improvement -- and set out to find something nicer.
I was closing in on a USA Kilts PV when I saw the B&S Casual
sale. They did have a MacLachlan in medium weight, but I thought
that if I was going for wool I might want a heavy. My wife chose
the Atlanta (police) tartan, which has direct connections for her
family.
Question: Would the extra yard option make a significant
difference for someone with a 34" waist?
I'm still planning on a USA Kilts PV -- I'd like something
machine washable(contradancing is sweaty), and a more muted tartan.
I've got several handmade sweaters in natural sheep colors(cream
to brown) that might go well with a kilt. We've also got a white
(ish) dog whose hair is unavoidable in the house, and a tartan that
disguised it would be helpful.
Any suggestions? I was looking at the Cladish, Holyrood, or Tara
as possibilities.
Thanks!

Welcome!
I think you'll find other Xmarks members with ties to Clan MacLachlan. I personally own a MacLachlan hunting tartan!
As to your question about the extra yardage, I am not a kiltmaker... yet, but in my experience, no, it would not make a difference for someone your size. Hopefully, one of our several kiltmakers will chime in and give a more informed opinion.
Again, welcome to X Marks the Scot!

Welcome from next door in Maine. I can relate to the dog hair problem. I've got a "German Shedder" who always seems to leave enough of herself behind to build another dog!

Welcome from sunny California
It is more a matter of your larger measurement. For instance I am 36 waist but 44 hips so yardage is based on pleating option and hip size for me. What is your hip measurement?
