    A Kilt Geek from Lowell

    Wow; what a fantastic forum!

I've always been into my Scottish ancestry, but first bought a kilt and Prince Charlie for my wedding (nearly 6 years ago now) as a way of honoring my forebears on both mom's and dad's side. I still wear my kilt primarily for special occasions, but can't imagine wanting to wear a run-of-the-mill tuxedo ever again!

Kilt specs: Purchased from Geoffrey (Tailor) in Edinburgh while I was travelling in Scotland in 2001. Tartan is MacKenzie modern (paternal grandmother's family). I own the aforementioned PC as well as a navy Argyll jacket, both from Geoffrey (Tailor). Sporrans (dress -- black muskrat -- and semi-dress leather) both from the Scottish Lion (before they changed management), as were most of my other accessories (kilt pin, sgain dubh, etc.). I'll try to post some pics of the full get up at some point.

Yes, I do realize there's a "Little" tartan, but it strikes me as a bit of it bit affectation -- and frankly I think the MacKenzie just looks better.

I tend to err on the conservative side style-wise (see J. Charles "Scotty" Thompson's "So You're Going to Wear the Kilt") -- but so much of proper style seems like it should be common sense. (Obviously not always the case judging by some of the celebrity photos!) I do like some of the things that Howie Nicolsby does over at TFCK -- I'm just not sure I could pull it off!

For anyone who's curious, my "avatar" is a plaid brooch from the Order of Scottish Clans -- a now-defunct fraternal organization founded by my maternal great-great grandfather back in the late 1800s. The brooch itself is sadly not a family heirloom, but I couldn't pass it up when I found it online at a reasonable price.

Well enough about me for now; I look forward to getting to know the kilted community.

    Cheers,
    Tim
