Kilt wearing is new to me
I am new to wearing kilts. Always wanted to wear one but where I am living it would be a stand out item. SO for years I just dreamed. But last year after talking to a Scot. friend he said go for it, I wear mine all the time. I said I am only Scottish by last name, but Native American by blood. Our last name was derived from Scotland many many years ago when a Scotsman mated with a Native and my family line was born. Always been drawn to the Scottish ways but want to stick to my native ways and heritage. So I am a mix to be sure. When talking to my buddy about respect for the colors and the families and not wanting to offend anyone he gave me permission to wear 3 tartan patterns/colors as an honorary member of the family. So I figured I would start off slow. My first 3 are considered utility kilts (khaki, black and camouflage) but want to get my first wool one in a tartan of his choice. I made my first sporran this past weekend (rabbit and leather with native hints). But I may look to order a black leather one for everyday use.
I can say that I get a lot of looks, a lot think I am part of the Renaissance Faire here in PA. I just smile and say no. I get a lot of hey what's under the kilt. Even got a few nice skirt, till they see my face and they quickly retract the statement.
Wanted to say thank you for allowing me into the forum. I look forward learning a ton from everyone here.
Thank you
Jarod

Welcome to X Marks the Scot!
Man, if I lived as close as you do to USA Kilts, I'd be dangerous!
We were all new to kilt wearing once. Wear it well and proudly. You will not offend anyone with your choice of tartan. Keep in mind that there are many universal tartans that are meant to be worn by anyone. One excellent example is our own X Marks the Scot tartan. As a member of this forum, you are welcome to wear it. Have a look at this thread.
Again, welcome.

Welcome Jarod. If you have a Scottish ancestor and that last name was passed down to you, you certainly have the right to use it. If there is a tartan associated with it, that should be your first consideration. Any of us wearing a kilt in the US will stand out unless we are at some Scottish or Celtic themed event. Be prepared for compliments and occasional questions. Wear it with pride - and enjoy.

Well met Jarod. I echo Mikilt in that all of us were (cloth incomplete) until we became kilted. The rest of your concerns will become as common as daily life can offer. Welcome from Oxford.
