    Kiltmaker Hall of Fame?

    Hello,

I'm enjoying this site & everyone on it. It's a smile to read references to threads on a site about kilts.

My question is whether there is recognition given to kiltmakers who have brought the craft to the point of artistry? Has this site ever voted for the kiltmaker whose work they most admire?

    Be well,
    Violet

Please carefully read the question folks - it is not who you would vote for but if you have ever voted for one previously.

Yes, sir, McClef. Follow on questions might be, is any organization photographing or otherwise preserving the best of the best? Has the work of past kiltmakers been preserved? Now that fur storage is conducted on a much smaller scale than it was only 50 years ago, could we prevail upon those places to store legacy kilts?

    Hello Violet,

Welcome to XMarks from the middle of Thetford Forest in Norfolk, England.

    As to your question

The Scottish Parliament tried (and failed) to codify in law the definition of a kilt. We have had numerous discussions here over the years on the subject and could not reach consensus. Every so often, the subject gets broached, usually be newbies. Long established members tend to leave the subject alone because they know the animosity that springs up almost immediately.

So, if we cannot define what a kilt is, how can we decide which is the best? I think your question will never be answered.

    Sorry

    Regards

    Chas

Other then the kilts that are preserved at the Scottish Tartan Muesum , and muesums in Scottland , I am not sure if one maker has been crowned the best yet .
But If someone crowned one as the best , then there would be 20 come along and say they were the best.
as for the forum here , I would say that all the kilt makers here are the best of the best.
This forum holds more weight in the whos who of Kilt making then any body esle.

I suspect the closest we have to preservation of kilts is Hamish Bicknell's Kilt Kollection (100 and counting?) which. IIRC, he has made provision for in his will.

Hilarious signature slogan. Thanks for the laugh!
