Kilts out in public
Had the family out for a fall (beer) fest this past Saturday. Myself and 3 year old son were kilted. We were enjoying the day when a woman looked at my son with total disgust on her face at what he was wearing. Then she looked at me and saw the same kilt on. I never saw anyone turn around so fast. On a positive note I also had someone later on come up to us and say how happy she was that we were proud of our heritage!

These types get everywhere. Life is too short to pay heed to them; its their problem.

What a strange woman. Oh well. It sounds like you had a great day, besides that, so that's a positive!
I've worn my kilt more frequently, and I can't say I've had anyone revolt yet (at least not to my face).

I had one friend show a bit of Disapproval in Church. I mentioned it to my Pastor and they said to wear my Kilt... This was about the first time I've been shown disapproval. Most are quite respectful. In fact most of the ladies like to see a fellow in a kilt...

People that matter don't mind; people that mind don't matter. Good on ya, keep enjoying your life!

The first time I went out was to a meeting of the local caledonian society at a scottish microbrewery. That went well, but on the way home my wife says, lets stop at Frys and do food shopping. Man, the looks I got. One guy was with small kids and I swear I could read his mind: how am I going to explain the man in a skirt to my children. Thing is, most Americans probably know what a kilt is, so why the looks of disbelief and/or disapproval? The cashier was cool, asked me what tartan it was and wanted to know if I was at some event. The person in line ahead of me was cool too. A dead head and he thought it was cool. At some point, you have to thicken your skin and also not care what people think.
American by birth, human by coincidence and earthling by mistake.

I find that my wife takes more offense than I do I usually just ignore comments, but she hears everything. Life is to short to worry about what others think. If someone asks a question I will answer. I have been pretty shy all my life so to start wearing a kilt was really opening myself up to talking to people for no particular reason other than to answer curious questions. It is fun and for the most part people are nice. If someone is being obnoxious I just give a blank stare .

Honestly I rarely get any comments one way or the other, just a lot of looks that convey everything. Some can be negative but for everyone who looks shocked or offended there's a dozen who have positive looks. Dropped my two youngest off at preschool and had one of the older teachers say "nice skirt, I was told you wore one" rather sarcastically. Meanwhile I'm getting some happy looking smiles, smirks and grins from a number of the moms who were dropping their kids off; definitely tilts to the positive on the whole.
