    Leg wear

    Wednesday,October 08, 2008

What a delight to find your site. Winter is coming and I am trying to locate a pattern to make some tall spats to wear when shoveling snow in my 350 foot driveway.
Do any of you have access to a pattern that is fitted, goes over vamp of the shoe, and heads up toward the knee? I do not want a "goretex gaiter style" with elastic... but instead something with a bit of history attached to it.
I can adapt the sizing. Thanks

Burda pattern 8127 has a pattern for sort of midlength spats. They're shown on heels, though I've used the pattern for myself, it works for any kind of shoe, really, and with a little alteration the pattern coud be extended up the leg.

Thigh high gaiters are were worn by the Highland Regiments in North America during the French and Indian War (1755-63). References note they were made of blue wool or brown linen. Other colors of wool may have been used as well, and they may have also worn Indian style wool leggins. I personally found the brown linen to work well in the summer while traipsing through the woods in warm weather, and the wool was better when the weather turned chilly or wet.

The link below provides information on how to make them (same general site as provided by Southern Breeze). They are not hard to make, but you'll probably need someone to help fit them to you. Be sure that you wear the hose you plan to wear under them. If they are snug and you put on hose, you'll find the gaiters constricting. Also, tie a leather or woven garter under the knee to keep them from slipping down.

from Peoria, AZ Sorry, no help with your question. My driveway is very short, and we don't get snow, and our history is pretty weak too.

I'll second (or third or fourth?) the leggings from the Seven Years War...I'm seriously looking at doing up a set for myself.

Welcome to the forum...hang around and enjoy the wit of the kilted.

...and didn't I once date your cousin Anteater Girl back in high school?
