Looking for info
Hello Everyone,
I'm a big fan of forums as a means to find specialist information. Where better than amongst a group of enthousiasts to find the tips and tricks that you could never find anywhere else.
I'm originally from eastern Ontario in Canada but currently live in Belgium. It's a big world and I want to see some of it. I'm Scot, Irish & French by heritage. So lots of Tartan options and the French side means I get to enjoy great food and wine while wearing it!
Ive been thinking about taking the plunge for a while now and have finally made the decision to buy a kilt. I served in a highland regiment as a younger man and always enjoyed wearing the kilt. My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Scotland in a few months we're going to visit Inverness and Edinburgh. Ill be driving so it should be a leisurely visit, except im going to be on the opposite side of the road.
Ive been reading anything I can find on the subject as it is no small expenditure. First off a big thanks to everyone who takes the time to share their knowledge on the subject. Im looking to pick up a "tank" as the lingo goes. Im a big fan of doing a lot of research, making a decision and investing a decent amount of money. I find that every time I do this I end up thoroughly satisfied for many years with my purchases.
On that note according to this website there seems to be a bit of a consensus on who the top Scottish tailors are:
Kinloch Anderson - perhaps a little pricey because of their reputation
Stewart Christie
Geoffrey Tailor, and
R&I MacDonald
My thought is to place the order in the coming weeks so that I can have a final fitting done when I visit. So Ive ordered a pair of swatches in a 13 & 16oz version of the tartan im interested in.
Any opinions or advice will be freely welcomed.
Thanks to all and Ill put some pics up when Ive got it.

Sounds like you ave done your research. I do not have any personal experience with those tailors/kilt makers, but I do not think you can go wrong with any of those.
Good luck and don't forget those pictures when you get your kilt!!

Hello Glen,
Welcome to XMarks from the other side of the Channel in Norfolk, England.
I have personal experience of both Kinloch Anderson and Geoffrey (Tailor). I would recommend (Geoffrey Tailor) without hesitation.
Regards
Chas

As you are visiting Inverness have a look at "Chisholms of Inverness" and they are to be found just behind the castle. Not the cheapest of options for sure, but they are amongst the very best and I can personally recommend them.

Welcome from Southampton Uk. Another kilt maker to add to your list would be our own Paul Henry . First class chap with an excellent reputation. Paul is near London so you will pass him on your way oop north.
Google Paul Henry kilts and you will find him. Best of luck whichever you decide.
P.s make sure the weavers have your tartan in stock. Paul will be making mine when my tartan is in stock again.

from Edinburgh. Having purchased kilts from both Kinloch Anderson and Stewart Christie I would not hesitate recommending Stewart Christie. I have no experience of the others I am afraid.

What a bummer... when my wife and I were in Inverness it was a "Bank Holiday" and all the shops were closed.
We did visit the amazing sporran maker Alexander Robertson.
