I first started wearing a "kilt" at a Tough Mudder 4 years ago. Since then, all my kids (four boys) wear kilts. Yeah, it's starting to get expensive with kilt pins, hose, sporrans, etc. This is why my best kilt is a "works" kilt from Sport Kilt, which, after seeing my little kids cheapo kids kilts let me know that these things are great for sports. That's about all they are good for (but they've been dang good for sports).
Since my 14 year old insists on wearing his kilt out and about (honestly, I think it's because the girls give him way more attention when he wears it), I decided to put a little more money on his kilt. I just ordered him a casual kilt from USA Kilts. I would love to order him something nicer, but he'll outgrow it in about 10 months. Fortunately, I have 3 more coming up, so they don't just go to Ebay.
For me, though, my "kilts" just don't pass muster anywhere except a sporting event. I'm tossed between picking up a Black Watch 5 yarder from USA Kilts (so my tartan matches the boys), a Graham Weathered with the tweed package from USA Kilt, or seeing if Alexis Malcolm can make me an 8 yard kilt with the US Field Artillery Tartan and then fixing up a more formal setup. My wife is on board with whatever I choose and she hates the fact that I'm taking a while to make the decision. Whichever way I go, I reckon I'll want something that will last longer than most of my dated suits.
Thanks to everyone who has posted on these boards. I've been lurking for a while and have ordered from some of the partners. Thanks for everyone for all the good info so far.

Welcome to the "Great Rabble!"
I'm old-school, so I'd say family tartan always!
Cheers!

Welcome!
If you're looking to get a kilt that you can dress up with and will last you a long while, I highly recommend an 8 yard 16 oz kilt - preferably in your family tartan, if applicable. It will never go out of style.

My father's mother was a Graham, but it's my understanding you only go with the male line, in which case, I don't have a family tartan. I wish I had a simple answer to "get the family tartan." It would certainly make decisions easier. Probably the closest I come is the Field Artillery tartan, which is a bit of a special order.

I didn't follow that rule. On my dad's side I'm pretty much just Romanian, but I think there's some Scottish on my mom's mom's side. And I know for sure which clan my wife's family comes from, if I decided to go the marriage route.
Go with what you like. No one will yell at you for wearing the "wrong" tartan, especially since you do have familial ties to Graham.
