New 2 Kilts
My name is Abraham Ortiz Kavanagh. I live in Albuquerque, NM. I am of Irish and Spanish blood. My Great Grandmother Julia Kavanagh came to the US from Ireland when she was a child and her family settled in the Southwest. My family is very proud of both our cultures and celebrate all festivities by blending our cultures we call our selves Sparish. None of the men have taking to the tradition of wearing Kilts the Spanish Machismo side taking over. However I have always been fascinated by Kilts and the tradition of how they are worn. I cant afford the $400 to $500 price tag I have seen on so many sites and thought I should learn to make my own. But I don't have the foggiest Idea of where to start. SO if any one has Patterns or ideas to share with me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Welcome neighbor...I'm on the road but I'm sure someone will pass on the exact title of Barb Tewksbury's book on kiltmaking and where go buy it. Think there are also kiltmaking instructions on this site if you poke around - or maybe someone will guide you.
And, though you can't afford it, you are in Albuquerque, home of the only hand sewn kiltmaker in North America who trained at the Keith Kilt School in Scotland. Kathy Lare. Check her website at www.kathyskilts.com.
And, you're so right about Machisimo....it was in Albuquerque a few years go that a most intoxicated gentleman who appeared of Hispanic ancestry hollared out at me across a supermarket parking lot, "Hey Switzerland!!"
He meant well, was just a bit besotted. That remains my best kilt compliment yet.
And, there are a bunch of folks on the board from around Albuquerque. I'm guessing they'll introduce themselves.
And, I've worn kilts all over Albuquerque with never a nasty comment.
I would caution watching for the updraft grates in some parts of downtown...but that's another story.
