New dude from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, eh?!?

I've been meaning to do something about kilts and the having and wearing thereof for a number of years now but haven't really had the opportunities or the cash to lay down for one. Until recently, that is and then an option presented itself last May when we were in California at The Kinetic Grand Championship. Yeah... that's not much of a Scottish festival, I know... but, it's an interesting story.

We were on the edge of Humbolt Bay on the second day of this race and I saw a man walking toward me in what looked like a shredded pair of longish cargo shorts. I stopped him and asked about his unusual rig. He told me it was a "utility kilt." And, in response to the Whisky-Tango-Foxtrot look I must have had on my face he gave me a couple of websites that I could look over to see what he was talking about and he went off on his way. When we got back to my brother-in-law's digs, I fired up the iPad and had a look. I wound up ordering a "Slash Pocket Utility Kilt" from an outfit called ScottishKiltShop.com; I was pleasantly surprised. I have a black one and a khaki one. Both are quite comfortable but aren't what I'd call a proper kilt.

So, I ordered up a 5-yard kilt in Heritage of Scotland tartan along with a sporran. Much better! Hangs nicely, not as heavy as I'd have thought it would be and isn't a cat fur magnet like the black cotton one seems to be. Bear in mind that these three kilts were not expensive at all and were experiments, more or less, to see if I'd actually be comfortable in one. The comfort question has been answered - yup, they're comfortable. Better than trousers.

Now comes the figuring out whether to go over to Stratford and get fitted up for a full-on 8-yard rig. Just what does one wear with a kilt to say... church or the grocery store or a wedding? Yeah, all the new to the wearing of kilt questions are there. Looking forward to some interesting dialogue.

Welcome from Sacramento, CA. Check this thread: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-attire-46888/

to see some ways to wear the kilt. Go to the second post, as I believe all the photos in the first have disappeared (at least in my browser). Good luck and Godspeed in your new journey!

Well met and welcome new friend. Being kilted in public follows the same logic you would use if in slacks. For example, nicer shirt for church or athletic socks with boots for hiking. The accessories become an expression of your personality and cash flow. There is no race for getting your ensemble to your standards. Glad to have you with us.

More from the new dude from Windsor, eh?!?

Well, I've ordered some hose and flashes and another kilt... Clan Lamont, 8-yards from an outfit called Scottish Kilt Shoppe (scottishkiltshop.com)... I'm expecting it this week coming. These guys were the place I ordered the utility kilts from. Generally pleased with the service and the product. For inexpensive kilts and accessories, I recommend them.

Wore the Heritage of Scotland kilt to St. Mary's Anglican Church St. Patrick's Day dinner... I was standing on the front porch of the house locking the door and a woman on a walk-about with her daughter had to stop and ask me about the kilt. "Where are you going? Are you in a band? Do you play the bagpipes?"... etc, etc. Interesting.

The next morning, in the church hall, after the Sunday service, one of the clergy says to me, "What are you doing in trousers?!?" So, the pattern is established. Mebbe I'll upload a picture or two when the Lamont kilt arrives.

    Cheers,
