The New Guy (Central Texas)
I'm a brand new to kilts. I do have a utility kilt to start, as my wife finally got me over the hurdle. I had been dawdling about it, because I was wanting to have a kilt to wear, but wanted to wear it far more often than I have special or formal events to wear them to. Then this whole utility kilt thing started showing up? Like the cousin to my jeans, I got what I'm growing to love as my "old blue jeans" version of a kilt: moss colored 10oz duck cotton "Kiltman" brand kilt with trouser pockets.
I know there's quite a bit of discussion on here about footwear, as I have been a lurker for some time now. But I gotta say coming from Central, South, and Gulf Texas throughout my life, I'll wear flip-flops with damn near anything! That being said, I'm one of those youngsters that sport a utility kilt with flip-flops, and you can be rest assured, as I wore them with my jeans in the Texas-winter, I'll probably be doing the same with the kilt. But in this 98º-103ºF weather, a t-shirt, flip flops, and a kilt are fantastic!
I also have western/cowboy style boots, but I haven't purchased a good kilt hose to go with them just yet. For me, is finding a good inbetween footwear for casual fridays at the office. You know, nice button down collared shirt, my non-tartan solid color kilt, and then I'm guessing just a nice pair of socks with my regular office/dress shoes.
My family is from the McWh*rters, so to our knowledge we didn't have our own tartan, but in following the Buchanans, just take on theirs. It seems most of my family branches (other than the McWh*rters) all hail from Scotland, and then some time in Ireland before swinging States' side, and Wales.
I started hanging out here to kind of get the gist of how the modern person wears their kilts from formal to reeeeal-casual. I'm pretty irreverent though, so I'll get the tradition and foundation down pat, and then break a bunch of rules (I mean you gotta learn before you can break 'em, right? ;)
Might thinking of getting a more sport-like-kilt next in my tartan colors.
Latha math agaibh!

Welcome, they were certainly a few McWhirters in the Wigtownshire/Galloway region when I was growing up.
