New guy from Walkerville South Africa
Greetings from Walkerville, Gauteng, South Africa.
Can anyone advise which other fabric one can use to make a kilt other than wool? I had my Livingstone muted tartan imported from a mill in Scotland & my kilt was made in Port Elizabeth, South Africa by a kilt maker. I want to make another one that is less expensive as I want to wear it on the farm as everyday wear. They are so comfortable!!!
Regards
Grant

Welcome to the "Great Rabble!"
You'll get lots of advice here. Poly-viscose seems to be popular. Avoid acrylics (I think that's the one that if it catches fire goes up like a torch.)

You can make a kilt out of any material you can get your hands on. That doesn't necessarily mean that you should build a kilt out of it, but there's nothing stopping you from doing so.
To get a better idea of which materials you should use, check out the various kilt making websites that you find online. The partners linked here on the site, either at the top of the page or down towards the mid-bottom of the forums if you have adblock turned on, will give you a pretty good idea of which materials are preferred. Searching google for "modern kilts" will give you some more material options such as denim and canvas as well.

Probably Polyviscose (PV) would be a good choice for a workaday kilt, lighter than wool, reasonably hardwearing, easy to dry and clean and cheap enough to work in. Take a look at some of the online kilt retailers for some ideas - I have one from Heritage of Scotland, who ship internationally. If you want to make your own, you'll find lots of great advice on X-marks!
Regards, Sav.
