New kilt-wearer from Southeast Michigan
Greetings.
I am from Southeast Michigan, and am a pretty much total newbie to the kilt (still haven't even quite mastered the pleatsweep). That said, I hope to work my way up to being a full-timer, except for worship (where I take the wearing any raiment that could draw undue attention to be disrespectful in the extreme), and at my current job at a very culturally conservative organization. My folks are somewhat opposed to the wearing of a kilt, citing the usual remarks about it being some kind of costume (it can be... if the wearer wears and treats it as such), and the usual "it's a skirt" line. That said, most of the bifurcated public who've seen me sporting it have been pretty impressed, which I gather is par for the course. The folks are slowly coming around.
I have a tendency to always wear "smart" Saxon wear (at minimum a blazer and a pair of crisp tr00$er$), and am therefore looking to get some kilt jackets and waistcoats (probably tweeds, Crails, Braemars, or Argylls) for a reasonable price, so if anyone knows where to look, feel free to chime in. I solicited conversion of a Saxon jacket from a local tailor who declined to do the job, citing insufficient expertise.
Outside of kiltedness, I am a university student studying political science and social studies. I have interest in foreign language (self-taught in Russian and German), history (don't even get me started), and recreational military simulation. I also plan to dabble in shoemaking and, failing that, leatherwork.
Anyhow, that's me. Any advice on the finer points of sitting in a kilt, especially in a car, (the only thing I find harder to do kilted) or on what to expect from kiltedness would be greatly appreciated.
Carry on.
