Hi everybody!
I just recently purchased a kilt and started wearing it after work and on the weekends. I have been reading posts on this forum for a while now and I have wanted to spend some time kilted in public before I wrote my first post. I took some time off work this week and did just that. Now I have something worthwhile to write.
This week people have come up to me and asked if I play the bagpipes, if I'm going to a wedding, and if I'm wearing my family tartan. One guy said his son intended to have a kilted wedding and wanted to know where I got mine. (You're welcome Rocky.) It seems that they're mostly curious about why I would want to wear it. It definitely initiates some unexpected conversation.
Does anyone have friends that are reluctant to be in public with them when kilted? Then they can't seem to explain why. Something strange is going on there... Could it be all about "The Question"? Only family and friends are rude enough to ask it. I make sure the mystique continues.
I have found that kilts take a bit more thinking about clothing choices than just the usual grab and go. I am going for an American casual look but I know I'll never blend in to the crowd unless I wear p@nts or shorts. Because I know that I will look different from the norm in a kilt I try to match colors and style to it to show good taste. I have never seen anyone else in a kilt anywhere except for at the Scottish festival in Sandwich, and the pipers were certainly not dressed in casual attire. I rely on this forum for style ideas, and I find a lot of good ones. Keep it up. Born in the 50's, I'm still young and impressionable.

Belated Hello and a warm Celtic from up Rt 3 in the lowlands of Boston, Massachusetts, and the shores of Plymouth.
The kilt is addictive and the American Heritage by Rocky is one of my favourites. I wear the kilt on all days that end in "y". I do wear it to piping lessons on the Orange line without even a second look. I have never worn trousers during my visits to Plymouth. I wander around Sandwich and Dennis kilted on the summer trips along the Cape. I hope to see you sometime.

You will get the bagpipe question so get use to it. People just think there has to be a reason to wear the kilt other than "I just like them". Back to a kilt is a costume mentality.
As for friends, I can't say I am aware of any that don't want to be with me. What I have found strange is some of my friends don't say a thing about the kilt. I don't know if this means they don't care one way or the other or that they don't like it so they keep their mouth shut not to hurt my feelings or have to lie.
I also find I am more aware of what I pick out to wear with my kilt as opposed to putting on p@nt$ and taking any old shirt out of the closet. I also find myself changing kilts during the day. I may be working around the house in an old Utilikilt in the morning then change into a tartan kilt to run errands in the afternoon. If I had on jeans I would just go out in the same old p@nt$.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Welcome, and yes, I have had friends distance themselves from me on account of my kilts, but no friend that I valued highly.
Regards,
Rex.
