New Member from Glengarry, Ontario
Hey there! Newbie member to this site -- looks great and already I've learned quite a lot just by searching some of the forums. I'm looking forward to getting to know the site and its members better.
Basically, I'm part Scottish on my father's side: Johnston being his mother's maiden name and my mother's side: She has a Stewart great-grandparent. My wife is also Scottish on both sides of her family, so our kids are more Scottish than anything else.
I enjoy wearing kilts everyday and have a number of them. I wear them even in the winter months up here in Canada where it can get down to -30C windchill. Outside of dealing with the crazy wind and snow flying upwards into the kilt, I don't seem to mind the cold.
I'm a professor at McGill University, a classically trained pianist, and an opera conductor/stage director. I also blog about opera and my life (patricksoperablog.blogspot.ca) and I will be blogging about my January 2018 fundraiser where I'm wearing a kilt every single day to raise money for women's scholarships to Universities.
I look forward to hearing from you veteran kilt-wearers and learning more about all of this! Best to all, Patrick

Welcome from the west coast! Love that you wear your kilt in the cold of Canada. I have photos of wearing my kilt (utility kilt) with snow all around while working on War For The Planet of The Apes as we filmed in the mountains and snow...I always found that a kilt kept me warmer than pants as the wind didn't hit me the same way. Now of course an updraft was different...

Welcome Professor! I'm confident you'll enjoy your time on this site. There is lots of knowledge here.
I am curious where in Co. Glengarry you are from. When I was in the U.S. Marines stationed in Ottawa (at the U.S. Embassy, early 1970s), I spent a lot of time in Cornwall (where my girlfriend (later wife) came from - Eamer's Corners, actually) and the SDG tri-county area. After we were married, we went back often. I still have friends that live in that area. The Maxville Highland Games was, of course, part of the experience (although I wasn't a kilt-wearer then), as well as Upper Canada Village. From what I've read, it wasn't so many before that eastern Ontario was a Gaeltacht, but I didn't see any Gaelic speakers when I was up there. My in-laws in Eamer's Corners told me that the parishioners of nearby St. Andrews (West) Catholic Church once raised a ruckus when a new Francophone priest was assigned to their church; he was withdrawn and a Scottish heritage priest was assigned. Please forgive the anecdotes - I hope you enjoy your time here.
