Hello, My shooting name is "Muskrat Mike" I finally go tired of portraying the Rocky Mountain Fur trade era like most out here in the west do at our monthly shoots. I am taking on the persona of an Irish/American "long hunter" from the middle to late 1700's. I have just ordered my first kilt with our family tartan from Fermanagh County Ireland representing clan McGuire. I am not a reenactor who has to be perfect in every aspect. This will be just my interpretation. With moccasins from the Huron Indians a period correct waistcoat and a forest green Tam I think it will do. I am attaching a drawing of what I envision my persona to be only with my family tartan, Olive Green Balmoral and leggings as depicted in the photo.

Well met and welcome Mike. I like the green introduced into your ensemble. It would be fitting for the era and circumstances you encounter. When you say "long hunter", does that include a bow or just a thunder stick? Glad to have you with us.

Followup question from Muskrat Mike
As I stated in my initial post I am taking on the persona of an Irish/American "long hunter". These brave men traveled long distances and were gone for up to 6 months gathering fur pelts to earn a living. Any documentation that these people would have continued to wear their kilts? My suspicion is that they took on the appearance and clothing of the "Americas" once they got here. If they brought their kilts they probably put them away as getting new material would be out of the question unless loomed here. As my family came from Ireland in the middle 1700's settling on the western most border of North Carolina and Virginia (some on both sides of the line) I just want to pay honor to them and continue with the wearing of the kilt. I am jealous of those on the East Coast who can't throw a dead cat down the road without hitting a colonial fort, battlefield, or site of an Indian massacre.
A special thanks to the people at USA Kilts who helped me pick out the "proper" kilt for my needs and answer a hundred novice questions.
