    New, from PA

Hello, I'm new to this kilt thing, and thought this would be a good place to talk with some people that are more familiar with this. I don't yet own a kilt, but am looking for one now. Thinking about getting one from stillwater, I've read good things here. I'm just a bit worried about sizing. my waist seems to fluctuate quite a bit, and I don't want to spend $150 on a wool kilt, and have it not fit or run into problems with alteration. When I measure my waist, how snug should the tape be. I Get anywhere from 36.5" to 39 if I don't tighten the tape at all, and I completely relax my stomache, but I normaly tend to suck in my gut a little . and in the morning I'm around 36.5". I'm at a loss as to what size I should get. does wool tend to shrink or stretch over time? Should I get a 38" and just have it brought in, or would a 36" open far enough on the largest strap setting. I spoke with someone at stillwater through email, but though they tried to help, I still am not sure. Any help please, I'm dying to get one of these, I think they look amazing, and can only imagine the comfort far exceeds the look. thanks guys. I look forward to my new found obsession.

Greetings from the Gulf Coast of Florida! I'm a newbie too, but as an owner of a Stillwater kilt, I'd say its really a toss up. If you go with the 36, yes you can open it up, but then that's basically it. Making it any bigger is going to be a real trick. (Although they do make strap extenders). On the other hand, if you get the 38, it may feel a bit loose at times. A belt will help some, and you can take it in a couple inches if you need to. But in general they say pull the measuring tape snug and see where you're at. I left it a bit loose when I got my kilt and now I wish I'd gone a size smaller.

That's my 2 cents but I'm not sure it helped any...

    Re: New, from PA

    First, welcome from Slovenia !!!

I don't own any Stillwater kilt, but I made couple of them. When you measure your waist you shouldn't measure too snug. But my experience tells me that I end up with kilt which is a bit bigger then I need it (feel comfortable). I like to wear it more snug. Usually waist measure of kilt is done with strap done in the middle hole, so you have some space to make it snugger or more loose; maybe an inch in each direction.

So, hard to say, but me personally would go for smaller. But don't blame me afterwards

Warm welcome from Norway, the land of the vikings.
I have no experience with the wool kilts from Stillwather, but according to their website a 36" can be adjusted up to 37.5". You should measure your size quite snuggly.
