New Scot from Texas
Hello good people! I'm new to the forum and wanted to say 'hello' before I pick the brains of those in the know about all things kilt.
I have only recently become interested in kilt wear and have been shopping around. I was able to trace my family tree back to the time when we first entered the US from Scotland and that sparked my interest in obtaining some real gear that represents my family clan.
We are Wilsons of the Gunn clan. David Wilson was the first of my ancestors to come to the US...unfortunately only to die at the battle of the Alamo.
After speaking with some very wise kilt wearers... I've opted for the Semi-traditional kilt from USA Kilts in the Modern Gunn tartan.
Any advice would be welcomed pertaining to foot wear, shirts, colors, etc.

Hello and welcome from Savannah, GA. A USAK semi-trad is a great first choice.
Your initial choices for shoes, sporrans, hose etc. should be driven by the type of use you're going to make of your kilt. Will it be primarily for casual settings, Highland games, kilt nights, etc.? Will you wear it for business? Or will you wear mainly for formal occasions? You can best post questions for uses like this on the "Kilt Advice" forum and you can look at kilts in various applications on the following excellent thread that was put together by a couple of our more learned members:

Welcome from both a fellow Texan and a Wilson.
Footwear is a person issue... You could wear anything from ghillie brogues to sandals, depending on your manner of dress. Shirts, either a button up or polo's look good, but, again, it's a personal preference. Now colors, I have my preferences... I like loden, lovat, and bottle greens...some navy blues, grey, and khaki. I would say, check out the photo galleries, look at the photo galleries of the vendors, and see what other people are wearing, and develop your own style, based on your own taste.. Basically, you have to be satisfied with your look, before you even worry about what anyone else thinks.
