New to the World of Kilts.
Good morning all !.
I may ramble a bit but I'll get to the point , please bare with me 😀.
A quick bit about me , I'm 42 , live in Cheshire and on my fathers side is the Scottish ancestry .
We are Shaws and as a tribute to my late father I'm wearing Ancient Shaw
Tartan when I get married this coming September.
I was a little dubious at first of this choice over the usual suit, however after going through some of the posts on the forum I can't think why I should have been or why I've left it so long to embrace the joy of wearing kilt !.
I have every intention of wearing my kilt(s) at every opportunity but I'm still a little nervous about going out in public for the first time pre-wedding.
Would you suggest I buy a utility kilt to "get used" to wearing in public before hand?.
All input greatfully received !.
David.

Welcome to the "Great Rabble!"
My own opinion is that you always save your money and buy quality the first time. "Practice kilts" are a waste of cash in my opinion.

To practise kilt or not to practise kilt?
Thanks for replying.
I do have one currently in order for my wedding .
An 8 yard Ancient Shaw.
I'll wait till that comes then go for a jaunt and get over my silly nervousness .
Cheer , David

Welcome from the highlands of central Massachusetts here in New England. Get a utilikilt if you want one but I don't think that it would help you get used to being out in public in a kilt. If utilikilt is your style, then great. If it is not then don't bother. Wear your tartan kilt proudly. It will be more recognized as a kilt than a utilikilt.

I think it depends on what your doing. When i wear a kilt to work its a "utility" style. If im going for a pint either will do. Shopping is easier with the pockets of utility style. In all cases you will get looks and mostly compliments. Women think its sexy, men think its cool and usually tell you how "they don't have the courage".

Thanks for your Replys.
Well I won't feel out of a place where I'm getting married as its in Scotland.
Which is just up the road , by 200 miles.
I'm sure I'll get over the nerves after a couple of outings!.

Welcome!
Utility kilts are great. But if you want a traditional kilt, then go for it.
All the best, Mark

Welcome from Chicago. Speaking for myself, the first time I went out in public in a kilt was to a Celtic festival. As I suspected I would not be the only one kilted, it made that first step out of the car easier for me. By the time I made it to the front entrance, I was all good.

My answer would be "no". Wearing a kilt you will stand out. Wearing a tartan kilt will bring questions about the tartan and you can explain your family connection. For me, it has been a great way to meet people and always in a pleasant, friendly way.
