New to Xmarks, shy on kilts
I live in southern New Mexico and have found very few Scots-minded people around. I work at a public library in the administrative department. I am former NAVY where I worked on steam propulsion equipment. I grew up in Tucson, AZ but my paternal line come from Scotland by way of Delaware, Pennsylvanis, and Virginia (my Da was in the USAF). I made my own kilt, after many disasterous trys; the costs keep me away from getting a "store-bought.
I wear it while out walking, on Tartan Day, to art fairs and such. However, I really want to wear it everyday, just as I wear pants to work everyday; it is so comfortable (why women want to wear slacks is beyond me . The only problem is that I work in an office and everytime I wear the kilt on a special occasion people treat me like I am wearing a halloween costume. Are there any snappy comebacks to use or suggestions for being more comfortable amongst kilt-heatheans?

Welcome, from Inverness-shire.
There are pages of "snappy answers" here, no doubt someone far more cleaver than me can point you in the correct direction.

You can always wear a costume, clown-cowboy or something, and when they ask why you are dressed in a costume tell them "I normally like to dress in my kilts but today is (insert any day or made up event) so I thought I would wear a costume instead."

Welcome from the highlands of Central Massachusetts. The best comeback is to keep coming back. People adapt. Be aware that some will never become comfortable with it and that is their limitation that they have to live with.

Welcome from Southern California. Kill them by kindness, and by giving them a history lesson. Follow up by asking if they know anything of their ancestors, the majority will not.
