Newbie kilt maker here - heading to Scotland this Fall!
Hello all - I'm excited to be a part of this community! I'm in the very early stages of making a kilt for my husband, and hopefully I'll finish it in time for a couple of local Highland Games this summer, as well as our 10th wedding anniversary this fall that we'll be celebrating in Scotland! I have 8 yds of 16 oz. ancient McAllister tartan, and the amazing "Art of Kiltmaking" instruction book. Any and all tips are welcome!!

Best of luck with your kilt project!
The Art of Kiltmaking is terrific.
That being said, I don't think there's any substitute for a hands-on kiltmaking workshop.
I took one from Elsie Stuehmeyer. It was, in truth, one of the most interesting weeks in my life. Spending that time with a room-full of cool people intent on the same thing I was, all the time getting hands-on instruction and loads of great stories about kiltmaking in Glasgow in the 1950s in Elsie's lovely Glaswegian accent.
