A newbie in Pennsylvania, outside Philadelphia
Hello to all from a Pennsylvania novice kilter, who already regrets that it has taken so long. A student in my college class told me about his one-year Study Abroad at St. Andrews University, and then, toward the end of term, appeared in class in a kilt. I hadn't noticed until he came up to talk after class, and I remarked how handsome he looked. Well, a few weeks later came a simple black kilt in the mail, which I tried on and immediately realized what I had been missing. The only member of my immediate family that I have seen in a kilt is my mother in a picture taken during a 1939 return trip to Scotland where she had been born. Other than that only pictures of the wedding of cousins, where all the males wore kilts. In retrospect, I wish I had been to one of them, but one didn't just pick up and dash across the pond before the age of cheap transatlantic travel.
I have promised a friend to dress in a real formal kilt and jacket for St. Andrew's Day in November and to go with him again to his high Anglican Church in Philadelphia. I will doubtless be the only one, but that's okay. I do wish there were more opportunities to wear a kilt in the Philadelphia area. Best to all who read this, Vincent

Welcome to the group. You will find a lot of information on this site about the kilt.

Well met and welcome. I bet there are more available times in Philadelphia to wear a kilt than in Mississippi. I (and a few other gents here) intend to change that. We do what we can. Glad to have you with us.

I wear my kilt on weekends. Go for it. You'll be surprised at (1) How many folks don't really care and (2) How many folks will come up and just start talking to you either with their own kilt story or to ask what tartan or just to ask where the event is (the correct answer is, "The event is where ever I am." (said with a smile, of course).

You don't need a special occasion to wear your kilt. I use mine as just another piece of clothing in my closet.
The hielan' man he wears the kilt, even when it's snowin';
He kens na where the wind comes frae, But he kens fine where its goin'.

Thanks to you and others for your welcome. As for USA KILTS, I have visited them and corresponded with Rocky, who has a confident optimistic view about wearing a kilt always and everywhere. Maybe some of us should seek a kilt therapist for our hesitation! Meantime, I do enjoy wearing a kilt as much as possible on my little 11 acres farm in Bucks County. No need to be seen.
