newbie in Virginia
So I know little to nothing about the history of kilts, but having an Irish and Scottish heritage I enjoy the idea of investigating my roots. So my dads side of the family is McGuire and my mom is McClure. Mom said they are Scottish but when I did the ancestry.com thing the McClure's came over from Ireland .... which was confusing but my Mom said they left Scotland to go to Ireland then onto the USA.... Soooooo... I'll take her word for it as I don't have any records from before the late 1700's....
Is a kilt supposed to be a representation of your clan ? I keep thinking of George Carlin noting the Asian tattoo translates to "beef with broccoli ..."
I didn't realize that kilts are worn in Ireland on certain occasions...
Is there a "Kilts for Dummies" manual ????
Thanks - and nice forum....
Mark.

Its possible. My own MacRanalds (from Keppoch) went to Ulster (Co. Tyrone), changed the spelling to McReynolds, then came to the colonies (pre-Rev War). Another of my ancestors (the Moores /O'Mores) started in Ireland, went to Scotland (I know not why) where a son of the name O'More was born in Glasgow, then they came back to Co. Antrim.
It can be a long, dead end filled process, but keep digging, don't just take mum's word for it. Verify as much as you can with a paper trail. Best of luck in your quest, it becomes addicting!

Welcome to the forum from a fellow Virginian. I'm in the Southern end of Amelia County, About 20 miles from Petersburg. As for a "Kilts For Dummies Manual" you have found the best place for Kilt advice right here on this site. My family came to this country from County Tyrone in the early 1920s, but I've found that we are Ulster Scots. So you might be also. If you are at any Celtic festivals or Highland games, stop at The Irish American Society tent and have them look up your name.
