a Newbie from Western Canada
It all started when I married a Scot who could trace his ancestry back many many generations and "went down hill from there". One year our son announced his elopement but they would have a proper formal reception several months later when we returned from our extended summer holiday. We were presented with the challenge of how to look like parents of the groom without having any formal wear with us. We found a kilt in a shop in the UK, bought a PC jacket and the whole kit and showed up looking stunning, surprising the bride and groom to the delight of all the family. Another family wedding and the kilt came out. Next step was the Scot wearing his kilt for special occasions in Mexico where we would spend several months of the year. Grins on the part of the macho Mexicans, I can assure you! Now another son has announced his engagement and the men in the wedding party will wear kilts and the accompanying gear in Prince George, BC (!), gutsy move on his part. SO that leaves it to ME, the non-Scot to provide the kilts. What a delightful challenge. I have almost finished making two 4.5 yd each and am on the third one, a 9 yd traditional one for my husband so am DELIGHTED with all the information on this great web site. I spend many hours looking at the partially finished kilts, thinking through the next steps and not acting until it *feels right*. It almost makes me wish my heritage was Scottish, there are such wonderful traditions in this group!!!

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
