Hello Group
I am in the process of getting a highland outfit in MacDougall tartan with a Prince Charlie jacket. My logic is to start with a kilt. Have been searching online and eBay, only confusing myself, could use some advice on the various options.

Hello and Welcome from Upstate New York.
Here is a link to the Clan MacDougall Society of North America. They are active across the pond, with significant monitary donations for the benefit of MacDougall and MacDowall properties:http://clanmacdougall.com/symbols.html
Therein, they have where I would start re: tartan. These are the same tartans which appear on the banner heading of Clan MacDougall Society Great Britain, Eire, Europe web site also. It appears to be MacDougall (Paton) STWR: 1776 or MacDougall (Wilson) STWR: 567 w/ Azure in place of Ecru.
Figheadair, M.A.C. Newsome, RockyR, OC Richard are experts at pin-pointing these things. Particulary...
OC Richard enjoys tracing specific tartan to its earliest exposure. If you are looking for the most "authentic" MacDougall, he may help.
If you are looking for "wont & use" M.A.C Newsome, RockyR may give keen insights.
Re: historic or original weaving, Figheadair may assist.
But each of these men know considerably more than I and all are tartan scholars as well as regular posters.
As for your own research, M.A.C. Newsome's site: http://www.scottishtartans.org/, under the Education tab, contains the original Tartan volumes. Perhaps familiarize yourself with them and their requisite flaws. They were published chronologically. To some extent, they are an excercise in one-upsmanship ex: The Sobieski Stuarts made up alot of stuff. The other guys stuffed 'em.
