question from a newbie in Atlanta
I tend to wear baseball caps most of the time. Is there a general consensus AGAINST wearing them with a kilt and polo/t-shirt for casual occasions such as summer highland games and festivals?

I haven't found a ballcap that looks good over any casual kilt wear, yet. Won't find many pics online of the combo. Some hats just don't look good with some attire. Doesn't mean its a no-no, but if the look suits your style.

Balding.....Summer highland games and festivals in Georgia tend to be sunny and hot. LOL.

I have seen ball caps at Highland games in Western Canada worn by band members before/after competing. It is an interesting and perhaps functional look that would make traditionalists like Jock Scott roll their eyes. These traditionalists may not be familiar with the Summer heat in the “new world” and not have an understanding of why we colonialists do what we do. 😉 That being said, I too prefer a wide brimmed hat for sun protection. Sorry the picture is sideways.

Welcome from another Atlanta area member! I've certainly seen quite a few baseball caps at the Stone Mountain Games, but they wouldn't be my choice for headgear.

Hello Randy,
I'm from Florida, grew up in Altanta, and also lack hair on top. I am with the others in heartily recommending a hat with a brim all 'round for sunny-day wear. I have worn a good straw hat (panama or the like) and Tilley hats before. I also find that my Tam 'O Shanter from Scotweb is fairly cool and breathable in the summer and covers my bald spot just fine, but it does not provide much shade for my face, so I often end up pairing it with sunglasses.
Few folks around Xmarks will sport the ball cap look. I think even cowboy hats might get more popular votes on this site One big concern about ball caps is that they don't provide sun protection for the ears or neck.
However, most folks here seem to approve and wear polo shirts for casual kilt attire. Lightweight banded-collar shirts (in linen or cotton) and pilot/safari type shirts are also popular choices. Although many here frown on them, the dreaded Jacobite/ghillie/pirate style shirt is also cool and comfortable in summer and creates a romantic (although not historically-accurate) look with the kilt.

I wear a ball cap and a clan t-shirt often on hot days at a highland games around the clan tent- never had anyone say a negative thing about it. And it is not uncommon for others as well here in New England. If I am going to participate in a parade or special event I switch to a Balmoral and collared shirt. I wear what's comfortable for me.
These are all xmarkers at a games in New Hampshire on a warm day - a variety of comfort.

Cabby Hat May Look Good
You may want to take a look at some cabby hats. I've seen others before wear them with kilts and they look nice and are casual enough. They're also a great option because you can find them all over the place and they are made with so many different materials that you can probably find one to suit you that is stylish and breathable and will look good with your kilt. They seem to be a good option because they are accepted with a more dressed up or dressed down look in my humble opinion.
