Recently Inherited a kilt and thought I would say hello!
Hi everyone,
An older friend of mine recently gave me a couple of utilikilts that he had outgrown. I realize that many folks don't tend to consider Utilikilts to be official kilts, but how could I say no?
I got one in solid black and one in solid brown and I'm getting a bit overwhelmed at trying to accessorize the two of them. As I understand it, brown is for casual, and black is for formal events. Beyond that, I have LOTS to learn. If I continue to enjoy them as much as I have already, I plan to get one in my family's tartan. I like the Walker Hunter pattern, but I'll worry about accessories for that one when that day comes!
Anyway, I'm in eastern North Carolina and you don't see people in kilts around these parts. 9 out of 10 guys you see wear Carhart's religiously. So will be standing out a bit, and expect some uneducated comments, but I plan to rock them as often as possible!
See you around the boards!

Just a common misunderstanding. When we talk about black being more dressy than brown, we are usually talking about our leather accessories, not the kilt itself.
Black shoes are seen as more dressy than brown shoes.
This would also apply to jacket colors. A black jacket is usually more dressy than a brown one.

Welcome from the central coast.
Utility kilts do not really lend themselves to being tres dressy, tho one can accessorize-up. Personal preference with solid colur utilities is to treat them as chinos of the same hue and dress around them accordingly.
The brown one with tan hose, a similar-to-hose color sweater (or light blue hose and pullover or Oxford shirt), brown leather shoes and sporran can give a casual "together" look.
Enjoy your "new" kilts.
