Standard New Guy.
Hey folks,
Standard new guy post. I'm a member of the US Army, currently deployed. Wear a kilt here in the sandbox and I've been wearing them for more than a decade now. Mainly wear the Utilikilts these days just for their ease-of-wear, but I'm looking to branch back out into the realm of the Tartan.
Which brings me for my main reason for registering here. I'm planning on buying a formal traditional wool kilt in the US Army tartan. The challenge is that I'd like to wear this with part of my dress uniform to go out to big fancy dinners and what-not but I'm not sure what regulations are going to say about it. I do know that you generally can't mix military and civilian cloths, but I can't say for sure about this topic. I'm hoping to stumble on some old soldiers here that can point me in the right direction, even if that direction is "back". Cheers, looking forward to many good times.

Regulation wear is a topic here from time to time. There are others much more qualified than I so I'll leave that to them. In the meantime, thanks for your service and welcome from Fort Worth!

Hello and Welcome from an old Marine Vet. First let's say thank you for your service.. It is very appreciated. I, like you, chose my tartan on my military service, I wear the Marine Corps Leatherneck.
On the issue of wearing the kilt while in partial uniform, we have had discussions on this, and we have a couple members who, have worn their kilt with their uniform, while at the Balls. I seen the pictures of them at Army events, and it looked nice. I will let them talk to you about this, since I am in no way an expert in Army uniform regulations.
Welcome again, and you might want to check out longhunter, who is currently serving in Afghanistan, he might be able to give you current Army regulations concerning the kilt... He is also a sandbox kilt wearer..

First, thank you very much for your service.
I'm sure you'll get some advice and opinion regarding the issue of mixing military and civilian clothes, but not from me. I'm not a vet, just an aging Army brat. But again, thanks for your service, and welcome to the forum from Savannah, GA.

Welcome from another sandbox,
If you decide to purchase your U.S. Army tartan kilt do add Kathy Lare to your list of kiltmakers to choose from www.kathyskilts.com She is from a military famiy (Marines) and hand sewed my Leatherneck and Royal Air Force tartan kilts. She's also trained in sewing the elaborate military box pleats. Of course there are many kiltmakers to choose from.
I believe I've seen pics of a number of guys wearing their military mess jackets with "unofficial" service tartans. Just don't recall the venues. May be okay at some events and not okay at others.

Welcome to the forum. Kilts were not a topic (never mind a possible option) when I joined back in '71. I'm sure one of the active duty members will be able to advise you. Thanks for your service.
