Wild & Wonderful in WV
Hi all!
I live in WV and make a living (barely) as a weaver. My strong Scottish roots go back to Clan MacLachlan. My brothers and son have been asking me to weave the family tartan for as long as I've been a weaver, but I've always had an excuse not to. Well, it's time. My son recently left military service and is anxiously awaiting the kilt that I promised him some years ago. Wool is not ordered yet, but will be in another week or so. Yeah!
I have woven several scarves for family & friends and square is coming out fairly square most of the time.
My boyfriend is 2nd generation American and is proud of his Scottish ancestry. He is of Forbes descent. Alas, he is the last of the line and has care and custody of his grandfathers wee kilt a vest and jacket. We believe that these were most likely made at the turn of the 20th Century or shortly thereafter. They were made by George Bisset of Union St. in Aberdeen. Charles Ranald Bannerman was born in Aberdeen in 1883.
I'm just looking to improve my general knowledge of all things "kiltish". I'm particularly interested in communicating with those who have woven kilt lengths and sewn their own.

A warm Scottish welcome from middle England. As far as the making goes, you won't go far wrong with Barbara Tewksbury's book "The Art of Kiltmaking", referenced in numerous places on this forum. Can't help with the weaving though.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Hi Loomiladi and welcome to the forum. Good advice on Barb's book.
Studies have shown that women who gain a few pounds live longer than men who mention it.

Welcome aboard, we've had at least one other member weave his own tartan material for a kilt. I believe that he went as far as spinning and dyeing the yarns as well.
Looking forward to seeing the work progress.

Thanks all, the book is ordered. I'll start with a commercial fabric and work from there
