Couldn't resist in picking up a second with Altrec's Fall clearance sale for $50. Now I have one to keep in my car for those quick lunchtime or after work hikes. Couldn't say no.

Ahhh tis the season to clear out the winter gear and put up the Spring/Summer stuff. Too bad Mountain Hardwear has yet to listen to requests for color options. At least they still keep making these. Ive got two and enjoy them both for climbing, hiking and running. Grab them now because they wont last and once gone they wont come back till next spring.

I just bought one of these from Mooesjaw.com. Everywhere else online seemed to be out of stock. I havent been able to find a brick and mortar retailer that carries them in Canada. I wish more companies would start getting in on this. Im surprised MEC, Canada's REI, hasn't tried making one, they are usually all over fringe products like that; for the Hipster appeal.

I have and use the original ElKommando - still hanging in there too! I am wondering if the currently available ones are the twin to the original. The word "improvement" is scattered around the net - some are referring to the Mountain Kilt and some don't elaborate on what is improved/changed. If you got the right size, there seem to be no problems or improvements I can see. ( Not a crack, many buyers are buying their first kilt and assume p**ts size is the same and get upset. )
Please, from someone who owns both original EK and current EK. Any difference? thanks

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Not having an original I can only go by what I have read. Apparently Mountain Hardwear had a Mountain Kilt that was not pleated at all in the back. I remember seeing maybe one of these on a guy once and thought it very much more skirt looking than a kilt. At that time I wore neither ElKommandos or kilts. The improved ElKommando was the addition of the pleats and I think also the cargo pockets. This gave it more the kilt look and feel, even though there isnt a heck of alot of swish. I have two I wear quite a bit and would have never had the original "skirt" looking one. So the improvements are the pleats and pockets that were added to the Mountain kilt resulting in the Elkommando.

I need to clear up my question. Mtn Hardware first made the Mountain kilt, then replaced it with the Elkommando. Then they quit making kilts for a year or two. Then last spring they brought out the Elkommando again by popular request - seems it caught on slow after the pleat less Mountain kilt fiasco.
So there are two Elkommando production runs. And I am trying to find out whether anything was changed from original to current run Elkommandos.
I have a first run Elkommando and am thinking about a second one as good or better than the first.

No, I bought my Elkommando's from REI two years ago and they are no different than the current production model. All outdoor clothing runs in seasonal cycles which means the retailers buy in fall for the next spring. Producers such as Mountain Hardwear only make the kilts for the spring/summer sale season, which is why you never see them in winter on sale. Ive looked at the last two years productions and they are not different than the first Elkommandos that replaced the Mountain Kilt. It would be nice if Mountain Hardwear would listen to feedback and offer more color choices. I think their model works well so it has not changed in the last three years. The reason I can offer this insight is I once owned a small outdoor retail store and buying was always a pain because you did it a season ahead of time. There may be another run of Elkommando kilts but right now REI is on backorder. I dont think they make too many as this is a specialty item and once mid summer hits you wont find them at all, thats when the fall gear starts coming in......

I just did a trip down memory lane. The Elkommando was my first pleated kilt and led me to where I am now - total kilt addict. I bought more than a few EKs between 9/13 and 9/22/2010 wiping out everyones stock of size medium and some smalls as I knew they were no longer made and at the time MH had no plans to make them again. They just weren't selling well at that time. Thinking this "the cats meow", I was going 100% kilted in EKs.
By May 2011, I had moved on to SKs and Utilikilts. I rejoined this forum for the purpose of giving away the extra EKs for the cost of shipping. They all got snapped up in a week.
I and others who had EKs or wanted them put the email "nag job" on Mountain Hardwear asking when they would make these again and wanting more color options.
They partially heard and released the second production run on February 15 2012 - still only in Otter. And initially only from REI and their own site.
Based on this thread they are getting rare again and it is well past the spring 2013 introduction date.
If you want one, Google around and find one in your size. I smell extinction again.
