Ever use a purse as a sporran ?

I noticed this purse the other day at a thrift store for 3 dollars. I figured it would make a good sporran. What does everyone think would you wear it, Would you ever wear a purse as a sporran.

Sure, why not. The style of this bag is the same as most of the day sporrans. I think that I would wear a masculine looking purse as a sporran or modify it to the right look. I've definitely stopped to look at some distressed leather satchels as potential sporrans. It certainly beats making it from scratch.

That one was a good find! I would wear it. My wife has flagged me down more than once in a store to show me a purse she found that might work as a sporran. It gets me some odd looks from other patrons, but why should I care?

I also check for belts in the women's section from time to time. There are a lot of belts in the 2-2 1/2 inch range, and while some are too short a lot of them are almost big enough to go around me twice.

I wouldn't. With Scottish made sporrans starting at $45 or so, I would use "the right tool for the right job" and get a proper sporran.

For the belt, I'd probably go wthout a belt (as it's not really completely NECESSARY to wear a belt with a kilt) before I wore woman's belt.

To each their own, but that's my $.02, FWIW.

There was time when my entire kilt outfit cost about $100, so a $40 sporran was beyond my reach. . I tried looking at the Army Navy for a suitable pouch, with no luck, but I found a simple purse in the ladies dept at TJ Maxx that I hooked up with a couple of choke chains from the pet store and wore for years. In fact, I think I have it on in my avatar... square, simple flap, flexible black leather. NOT elegant, but it carried my car keys nicely.

I would have grabbed that tan number in a minute, but I am with you on the ladies' belts. I go without often enough...

What I REALLY like, though, is the idea of a lady carrying a sporran as an evening bag. I am still looking for the right combination of sporran and lady. You'd have to modify the strap a little to wear it as a shoulder bag....

If it's outside of the price range, then why not search Ebay? As much as I personally don't like "import" sporrans made in China or Pakistan, they start at $15 to $20. At festivals we go to, we occasionally see a guy wearing his wife's purse as a sporran. It doesn't look like a guy wearing a kilt and sporran, it looks like a guy wearing a kilt with a purse strapped around his waist.

I'm not trying to "criticize" or give a "hard time" to people who are on a budget. I completely understand what it means to be on a budget. I'm not trying to sell anything as a retailer. I'm simply stating that if you're going to make the commitment to wear a kilt out and about, wearing it with a proper sporran will vastly improve the overall look of the outfit.

I wouldn't use a broom handle to shoot pool.
I wouldn't use a whiffle ball bat to play baseball.
I wouldn't use a hockey goalie's glove to play baseball.
I wouldn't use a hockey helmet to play football.
I wouldn't wear a purse as a sporran.

Save up for a few weeks and get the proper tool for the job (no matter WHAT the job) if you really want to do something right. Alternatively, drop hints to loved ones about a good birthday / Xmas / whatever present.

Again, my $.02. Your mileage may vary.

I have to go with Rocky on this one. My big concern would be wearing it in public and some woman running up to me to show me we have the same purse!

I have been steered towards womens knee-high sock web sites that have what look very similar to kilt hose at a cheaper price...but the fact is they are womens' socks, and not men's hose. I will pay the few extra dollars to do it right. The same with mens' sporrans vs. womens' purses, or mens' pins vs. womens' brooches, or mens' kilts vs womens' skirts!

Personally, I'd pass as well... It's a purse.

The sporran is front and center on your kilt, it WILL get noticed. For $25-35 on eBay, you can get a fair quality import sporran- and it WILL be a sporran.
