Harness Boots with a kilt??
Hey all. I am really new to the board but I have been wearing kilts for along time. I am wondering if anyone has opinions on leather harness or engineer boots with a traditional kilt. Just trying to mix up the mod. look a bit. Cheers.

Simple answer - if you like them, wear them!

With a utility kilt maybe. But with a trad kilt, no never.
Just my opinion.

I personally think harness boots are too wide and loose at the tops to be worn with a kilt. Your legs would appear to be sticking up out of the middle of the boot, making the boot look too big for your leg, much like women who wear cowboy boots with miniskirts. I think that look is clumsy and out of proportion. I have seen photos of high boots being worn with a kilt with success, but those boots fit tighter to the calf.
However, if you like the look, wear them.

I'm not sure I would go much taller than an 8-eye Dr. Martens boot, or similar. The engineer boot would look too clumsy, IMHO.

Not sure what an "engineer boot or harness boot" is, but I think boots can look good as long as hose are rolled down to cover the top of the boot. The look needs to be very casual.
A young style often seen in the streets, the countryside and in the Highlands.

I've not heard the term harness boot either, but this is generally what people refer to as an engineer boot (in my part of the world, anyway):

I have a pair of black engineer boots made by Chippewa. I usually only wear them if I'm riding my Harley Davidson. Personally, I don't feel they would look very good with a kilt. Mainly because of what the others have said: they tend to be 'open' at the top. Not snug with the leg, since they don't lace up.
But of course, depending on one's leg proportions and the height of the boot, it could very well be pretty close to snug at the top and look OK.

I tend to agree...think of kids in puddle boots (Wellingtons, maybe, across the pond? )...it looks goofy. Hell, adults in rubber boots look goofy, too.
Yeah, definitely check out some lace-ups. I wear a pair of pull-on boots pretty much daily, similar to the boots in the pic, but with a higher rise...I'd never wear them with anything but pants, or the excess material to allow for pull-on and leg movement would look silly.
On the other hand, I can certainly see wearing my Red Wings with my trad kilt, assuming I had the right hose. Depending on the boots, you can get punk, casual, or downright "don't f@#$ around with the guy in the kilt"...but IMHO that's all with lace-ups, not the style to which you refer.

I do this all the time at home. If I'm wearing my kilt around the house and I need to go put the horses in the barn, I slip on my muck boots. And yes, it looks pretty goofy! But it's OK - no one can see me. I don't think I'd go out in public like that.

Lace-up Red Wings (steel-toe work boots) are what I wear when I decide to wear boots with my kilt. And I keep my hose pulled up and tied with garter ties.
