    Kilt rehab.

In 2009 I bought a Gold Bros. Heritage of Scotland kilt. I like the tartan, like the feel and especially liked the price. A few week ago I decided I wanted to put some pockets in it and so deconstructed it and turned it into a box pleat instead of a knife pleat. I had to do this as once I took it apart I quickly found out that is was a pretty short yardage kilt ( 4 and a half yrds )

I think after all things are considered it turned into a pretty darn nice box pleat kilt.

Nice... Was it sold as a five or an eight yard kilt to start with?

When I bought it there was no labelling as to how many yards were in it. It simply said "Highland Kilt". I knew from the feel that it was fairly low yardage but I wasn't too concerned with it. I think in the back of my mind I knew it was destined to be rebuilt.

Nice work. How long did it take to rebuild it?

I'm not personally a fan of pockets in kilts, but you did well.

It took me about 2 hours to take it apart and another hour to clear out all the cut threads. After that there were 2 more hours in layout and finally about 4 hours of sewing. The project ate up the better part of a day, but it was a day well spent as I got a real good look at the "guts" of a Gold Brothers kilt and of course ended up with a kilt that is every bit as good looking as the original with a boatload of more grooviness! ( Because it now has pockets )

We get a large number of kilt wearers that come through the shop and simply can't picture a kilt with pockets, or are already convinced that they wouldn't like the feel or hang of one. That is to say that they feel that way until they put one of our kilts on and slide their hands effortlessly into the pockets and then as they look into the mirror something magical happens, it's like their perspective grows 3 times larger and they want to take all the presents back to the kids in Whoville when they notice just how good a kilt looks that has been engineered to be so. Now admittedly not all these folks order a kilt ( although a good many do ) but more importantly they come away with a major shift in thinking with regards to the contemporary kilt and that in itself is priceless.
