Pondering Adding a Front Apron Pocket: Contemporary Canvas
Has anyone ever put a pocket, somewhat like the back pocket of jeans or the pockets on the legs of cargo shorts, on the front apron of a contemporary kilt down in the corner around where the kilt pin might be worn? My apron is wide like a traditional kilt apron.
In other threads, I had been considering adding a strip of bias tape, sewn into a tube, to the bottom area of my canvas kilt to hold the giant safety pin I like to use as a kilt pin, but the pockets on cargo shorts keep popping into my mind when I try to envision it.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Haven't put a patch pocket but the next contemporary kilt I was going to put in some double piping pockets with the piping near the waist band as an experiment

Let us know how it works.
I was just looking at the lower pockets on some cargo pants. They have a flap and button in addition to the double piping (hope I'm thinking of the same thing). That might be interesting, only a bit smaller.
Guess I would need to find a matching canvas to my kilt.

This is the type I was thinking about, not exactly how I do them but I think it could work in a have pocket yet not have something on the apron.
You can also do this type of pocket with a flap

Oh, ok. That isn't really what I was thinking about with this pocket. It could be a patch pocket, like on the back of jeans, or the cargo pocket that has the folded sides that expand out, like bellows. I can't remember the term for that, but it's a lot like a box pleat.
I just got mixed up.

The hardest part about it would be finding the same color of canvas. Of course, you could always use a different color. Making the pocket would be relatively easy, if your sewing machine can handle sewing through multiple layers of canvas.

I've put them on several of mine, althought I did do it while I was making the kilt from scratch. My kilts are more along the lines of UK and X-mark kilts, so the apron is around 11 inches. I use it for my keys, using a D-ring and chain to the belt loop. Also good fun with a phone on vibe, many jokes can be made.

I would have to get someone to do the machine sewing, but I do know someone for something small like that. I suppose something decorative, like a double line of stitches, could be sewn into the pocket.
Although, something ornate would be cool with one of those machines that do embroidery.
Papa Slob, that gives me an idea for putting a small pocket for my watch on the under apron, so it is a little passed and behind the edge of the front apron. I might put a D-ring on the waistband somewhere to attach the chain.
Thanks for the ideas.

Myself, I'm thinking a double-piped pocket, with just the opening visible from the front, might have worth. I envision either of two possible locations for such a pocket on the apron... 1.) either right where the sporan would normally hang, such that the sporan conceals the opening, or 2.) just at the bottom edge of where a belt would normally sit (again, to largely have the piping "disappear" or get visually "lost" in the tartan, by the proximity of the belt/buckle.)
Either way, I wouldn't want to see such a pocket be large or capable of carrying anything bulky (no fat wallets), or anything the weight or bulk of which would make the tartan hang funny, the apron hang lopsided, or show ugly buldges. A place to tuck a set of car keys, a slim id wallet, and a $20 bill might not be a bad idea. But then the obvious question: Why not just use the sporan for such?

Not so sure I want to wear a sporran too often with a canvas kilt. I had considered Riverkilt's suggestion of vests, also, but that might be a little too hot in the summer.
My canvas kilt has no pockets, as it is, and I'm trying to adapt it just a little. This pocket would be where a kilt pin might go, and might be big enough to hold keys or something small.
