This is true!
About three months ago, I contacted Union Kilts for more information on their kilts than the website gave. The response was one of joy that Hamish should have shown interest in their new company (the partners, Oliver and Richard, knew of me from the Utilikilts forum and Tom's Café)!! To cut a long story short: it came about that they would make one of their Heavy Leather kilts for me, on receipt of my vital statistics, (there was a delay in getting the fabric kilts started) with the request that I would give them a detailed report on it from the experienced kilt-wearer's point of view.
I have recently submitted my report, have exchanged several lengthy letters with Richard and enjoyed more than one telephone conversation with him. The result is that all my points have been considered, some re-jigging of the design has been implemented and a second kilt is being made to the adjusted design for my further consideration.
It would not be fair of me to comment publicly at this stage, I think, until I have given the new design a test drive.
There are/were similarities with Utilikilts and I understand that Richard has been in conversation with Steven at Utilikilts about this - he does not want to compete with the American company. He is, however, very much aware of the high cost of importing Utilikilts into Europe (shipping, duties, taxes, etc., etc.) and is keen to offer kilt-wearers over here a first-class kilt at a reasonable price. I must stress that the Union Kilt is NOT a traditional kilt; it is an alternative, contemporary kilt made in the European Union (hence, I imagine, the name!)
I shall be interested to see the quality of the fabric kilts which, I understand, will be available very soon. However, if it is anything like as good as the workmanship in the leather garment, then Union Kilts are to be recommended.
This is a previously published photo of me (trying to look mean!) in the first kilt:

Union Kilts is a very new company which is still feeling its way into an expanding marketplace. I like what they do but, it has to be said, as with any alternative kilt, it may not be everyone's cup of tea. Time will tell.

I've been following their website since info was posted a while back.
If their products are as well done as their website could be good stuff.

Hi to all
Especially to Hamish.
Just thought we would take this opportunity to introduce ourselves here, as many seem to be talking about us.
I must say Hamish you do look cool in that Kilt :-)
We have been listening to Hamish and taking on board his comments of which has helped us make some adjustments to our designs.
I have to say thank you to Hamish for his input.
Take a look at the web site now guys and see some forthcoming new products.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
Best regards
Richard & Oliver

It's your kilt that's cool Richard (or was it Oliver?), not me!

Welcome Aboard Union Kilts...dang, there goes the UK abreviation...gonna have to spell it out now...
Have a question for Union Kilts and/or Ham...my besotted mind seems to recall talk of a new leather kilt where the leather sections were not completely sewn together but flapped loose like a Roman gladiator's skirt...was that the Union Kilt leather?? or another shops?
Thanks,
Ron

Ron, those of us living in the UK (United Kingdom) have had that same problem for several years now when writing about UKs (Utilikilts)!!

You're correct, Ron. The 'Gladiator'-idea leather kilt IS from UnionKilts. It's what they call their "Light Leather Union Kilt" and is illustrated on their website.
I have seen it and it is certainly 'different'. The website photos, unfortunately, do not do it justice. It is also, like their "Heavy Leather Union Kilt", beautifully made. I'll post a photo when I receive mine!!
