    Waxed/oiled cotton hunting kilt?

a few years ago House of Bruar offered a waxed or oiled cotton kilt. I believe it was labeled as a hunting kilt. Does anyone know who makes these? I own a high end wing-shooting store in the US, Doubles and Dogs and I would like to offer these to my customers/web customers.

The material was similar to that of a Barbour jacket.

I did contact House of Bruar and they mentioned that even though they did not list it in their catalog - they could still get the kilts. But they would not work with me as a distributer.

I don't know who makkes the kilt but I'd definitely be interested in purchasng one if they became available. It would be perfect for rainy highland games when it's too hot for a long cape/coat.

They are great!I have used them for years.I think that it is a bit much to call them a kilt(perhaps they are though),think of them as a far superior form of waterproof "trousers".You have much better freedom of movement, better for the all important footwork when mounting the gun,and much better when the "call of nature" arrives and finally they can easily be stowed away in a "poachers pocket" when not in use.The modern ones are now held together with velcro, rather than a buckle.I give them to my shooting pals as a thankyou and they, after the inevitable skirt comments, are converts and will not be parted from them for anything!

This is all new to me - I have never heard of such a thing. Pictures would be very welcome! Are they an over kilt?

Can't quite understand what you are talking about. More info please!

Give me a couple of hours James and I will take and post a few pictures for you.Don't run away with the idea that it is a "real kilt" as it has no pleats,it is just a waterproof outer layer worn over our shooting plus 4's.The ladies,my wife included, use them alot to wear over their smart clothes whilst they are doing the horses or seeing to the dogs.I am not sure that I have ever seen one worn over a propper kilt, but I suppose one could.I think Mr.Anthony's Inverness cape would be far better for that job and,I think, would be a few £'s less.

    Cotton hunting kilt

Right then some not very good pictures of the "hunting kilt"(us Brits. hunt with horses and hounds and shoot with, er, guns). The "kilt" is held together with 2 velcro patches at the waist and 1 halfway down the apron edge. The outside is lightish waxed cotton and the interior is lined with a nylon type of stuff.100% percent waterproof and windproof. It is surprisingly light but tough. The one in the picture is about 6 years old and leads a very hard life.I would not ever go shooting without it.

    The outside.

    The inside.

    Wearing it.

Rolled up and stowed away in a poacher's pocket.

The trick to get the best effect of keeping the wet out is to wear Wellington boots(not sure if you call them that in the U.S.A. so rubber, just below the knee boots).Anyway the "kilt" needs to hang something like my picture so that the wet drips onto the boots and not down into them.

    Interesting. Thanks for describing that.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I'm sure this is ridiculous, but I could certainly see something like that either over a regular kilt or pleated into its own kilt for hiking and hunting, using gaiters over hunting boots. That way it'd seal out any dripping water. Hmmm. I don't really like Wellingtons, as I like my boots laced tight for good ankle support. So I use waterproof gaiters over them instead.
