4.5m of fabric
Through a Canadian on-line site called "kijiji" (similar I believe to Craigs List in the U.S.), I managed to purchase some MacDougall tartan fabric from someone in a different part of the country. It was only $50 so I didn't bother to ask how much there was, what weight or type it was, I was just thrilled to find it.
When the package arrived it turns out it is approximately 4.5 metres of 16 oz. of MacDougall Ancient. I'm told that such material would cost several hundred dollars at retail so I am feeling very fortunate and I want to make sure that I put the fabric to very good use.
I understand that this is not enough material to make a traditional knife-pleated kilt for me (I am 6' tall, 35" waist) but I am wondering whether this is enough to make a military box pleated kilt?
If not, any suggestions on other uses?

You're correct it is not long enough for a traditional kilt. It might, however, be enough for a box pleat kilt. Check out the addition to Barb's book which she and Matt did. It certainly, at 16oz is heavy enough for that.

First, a military style box pleated kilt is made using the same amount of material as a standard modern knife pleated kilt, i.e. approximately 8 yards for an average sized man.
That being said, it is possible to make either a knife or box pleated kilt out of seven, six, five, and as little as four yards of cloth.
If the fabric you have is double width (54" wide) then you have enough to make any style of kilt you like by cutting and joining the material.
If the fabric you have is single width (29" or so) then you only have enough for a lower yardage kilt.
