I am going to jump in here, since I am probably the one organizing the evenings, and a question was raised in another thread (PDX Folks, wanna learn how to make a kilt?), post #17, about a possible Kilt Night during the Kilt Kamp.

Kilt Kamp itself is August 3 - 7.

The evening of August 3 will be kept free for Symphony Splash, if folks want to wander down to the Inner Harbour to enjoy that.
The evening of August 6 will be reserved for a barbeque at the home of The Wizard and Kilted Knome.
So, that leaves the evenings of August 4 and 5 as possible dates for a Kilt Night. We have a pub/neighbourhood restaurant less than a block away which is a good location for a Kilt Night, or we can try to organize something downtown. I'll talk with The Wizard and try to firm up which evening.

I'm going to bump this back to the top.

There are still two open seats for Kilt Kamp. One in Barb's trad course and one in my Contemporary course.

If you would like to attend this years Kamp please let me know via email as soon as possible.

We have just filled the one empty slot in the Traditional course.

There is still one opening for the Contemporary course. If anyone would like to join us I would need to know soon.

Okay, thanks everyone for their patience. Kilt Kamp organization was on hold while we were preparing for the Victoria Highland Games, and I have been on the road a lot with my "day" job.

But, now we are back in high gear. So, here's the plan. Sunday night (August 3) is Symphony Splash down at the Inner Harbour for anyone who wishes to attend (http://victoriasymphony.ca/splash/). Monday night is "The Princess Bride" movie showing in the kilt shop with beer and pizza. Tuesday night (August 5) is a Kilt Night at the Fernwood Inn (we have reserved several tables starting at 6:30 pm, enough for Kampers, XMarks locals, and spouses). Wednesday night is a barbeque -- will be held either at our house or on the back deck and parking lot of the kilt shop (we'd put the tents up). The Kamp ends Thursday evening, so everyone is on their own for that night.

If you are not participating in Kilt Kamp but wish to attend one of the functions, please PM me. I need to know numbers for organizational purposes (you certainly don't want to be turned away at the door -- that would be embarrassing!) The Kilt Night at the Fernwood Inn is self-pay for Kampers and approved non-Kampers alike (well, the exception is Barb -- we pay her bill). The Fernwood Inn (http://www.fernwoodinn.com/) is our local pub/restaurant, a short walk from the kilt shop. The Princess Bride night we usually take up a collection for beer and other beverages of choice, but we provide the pizza.

Have I covered the key points? Everyone coming to any of these functions must agree to having candid photos taken for non-participants to enjoy later on the forum. I had a lot of fun taking photos during the last Victoria Kilt Kamp , even though I am not an expert photographer like Dave (Barb's other half).

Would it be OK to pay the kilt night costs in real money, or should I convert some into Canadian dollars?

If you use a credit card, you pay in Canadian but it will show up as the equivalent US (as you put it, "real money") on your account. The Fernwood Inn accepts Visa and MasterCard for sure.

In Victoria, most stores and businesses accept US dollars as cash, but you will receive change in Canadian (the exchange rate is posted). Also, the exchange rate is only applied against paper money when cash exchanges hands -- coins are considered equal value (so a US quarter will be considered equivalent to a CDN quarter). In Victoria particularly, everyone has a mixture of US coins and CDN coins in their pockets -- all are treated as CDN coins for purchasing purposes. Coins here include "loonies" and "two-nies" -- $1 and $2 coins.

Please note that not all shops up here will accept the new credit card "debit" cards, so be prepared for that. We had a case recently where someone from the US tried to pay for something on our point-of-sale (POS) machine and because the card was linked directly to a line-of-credit, it was rejected by the internal settings of the POS.

True... Luckily such limitations are not that common (as someone who has and uses a credit/debit card issued by a U.S. bank)... And if a merchant can't accept that form of payment, it wouldn't be too difficult to find any ATM and withdraw cash. (But you will pay a service fee for doing that). I also have a British-issued Mastercard that's denominated in Canadian dollars, from a foreign company who keeps an branch office in Calgary. Again, 90% of the time I can pay without any problems, but once in a blue moon it gets rejected from certain merchants due to the settings of their machine, or agreement with their payment processor. (Yeah, I know. My line of work requires me to deal with some El Bizarro financial institutions). Lol.

NOOOOOO.. that's the Maxville Games weekend
Ugg, yet another Kilt making event I cannot attend (the other one is smack in the middle of 2 games)
Am I just destined not to ever learn how to make a Kilt?
It's starting to feel this way...

    sigh... here's hoping one day.

(any chance of a Kilt Tutorial/Kamp, during non games season?? for those of us involved in them... hint hint ;) )

*edit: but all of you attending, Have a Great time!**
