    Weird juxtaposition

As a DIY kilt maker I find that at times that the relation ship of materials to work is a little off eg I just started to make a full on lined and hand made kilt out of the $3 a yard poly rayon suiting the Crew pikked for thier tartan back before we decided to make the kilts part of the uniform and we were only looking for material to make decent kilts for a weekend event. At this point I want to upgrade the kilt as it is showing the strain of being worn at least once a week.Do's anyone else find that they make kilts out of unlikly materials.

I suggest you check out the kilt maker's forum. A lot of folks use canvas and I have some black canvas just standing by to make one of those. I'm only on my second kilt and I'm using a heavyweight cotton just to learn how to work with a plaid. My first kilt was cotton/poly with 10% lycra (found out about the lycra at home when I noticed some stretch in the fabric) but it worked out well.
It's just my opinion, but for me, I need to work with the less expensive materials for a while until I build up my skill. The thought of cutting $80 a yard tartan is still daunting.
It don't mean a thing, if you aint got that swing!!

The short answer is yes, I do use...have used... less expensive stuff to practice on. My first kilt out of "real stuff" is my next one, after I finish this grey one I made out of a wool/poly blend I got from Fraser and Kirkbright.

How is it working with the wool/poly blend? Have you had any troubles with it we should look out for?

The only thing I have noticed in terms of 100% wool and a wool/poly blend is that the blend seemed to me a bit 'stretchier'.

I found the 100% wool easier to work with...
