    5 v. 8

    Hi Rocky,

If someone wearing one of your 5 yard kilts was standing next to someone wearing one of your 8 yard kilts, what would I notice as being different?

    Thanks!

As a general appearance, not too much from the outside, but the devil is in the details.

The 5 yarder is top stitched while the 8 yarder is sewn inside out to hide the stitches. On the 5 yarder we DO TRY to hide the stitches (and use a matching color thread) as best we can and do a pretty good job at it, but if you look very closely, you can see them.

The 8 yarders all have proper canvas reinforcement and cotton linings. Our 5 yarders currently do not have any linings THOUGH I have just bought a large quantity of cotton twill to use for lining 5 Yarders going forward and have been experimenting with ways to machine sew the lining without interfering with the look / hang / swish of the kilt.

The 5 yarders don't have an option of pleating to sett or stripe... it's pleated 'the best way we can to make a nice pattern' on the back of a kilt. In my mind, this is where a kiltmaker must be a bit 'artistic' to make up a nice pattern. It's one thing we take a lot of pride in... having our 5 yarders look like they were supposed to be pleated that way, not just some random pleating or super wide 'sloppy' looking pleats like many company's "Casual Wool" kilts are made.** Also, we use a full 5 yards (or 6 depending on size) for our 5 Yarders, as opposed to many company's 4 yard "Casual Wool" Kilts.

I hope this sheds some light on the differences and what we do to make our kilts special.

**I am NOT knocking wide pleats like on a box pleated kilt... that's a different 'animal' altogether.

    Thanks!

Are the pleats wider with the 5 yard? What about depth of pleat?

They all look nice in the photos, btw. I think I probably desire an 8 yard kilt, but unfortunately I'm not the only person involved in the decision...

Pleats on OUR 5 yarder are no wider than 1.1" wide. Typically, the repeat we use is about 1" - 1.1" Reveal : 5" material. That would give a pleat depth of roughly 1.9" - 2".

    Thanks Rocky!

I think I know what I need to know. There really aren't any magic spells to make less = more, are there?

If only there were a magic spell I could use on my wife to make her understand why it's so important to have another kilt.
