Newest Kilt: California Tartan
Arrived a week ago today: 5-yard 16 oz. wool. It's really odd how the colors seem to change with the quality and type of lighting, and with distance. I really, REALLY like this one. I was uncertain at first whether to go for it, wasn't that fond of the coloring as it appeared in the pic on Rocky's site; but he told me basically that it didn't really look quite like that and I decided to pull the trigger. I'm very glad I did.
Wore it to dinner tonight at a Brazilian churrascaria. My friend/dinner companion described it as "totally badass".

Looks nice! Is it possible to get a few more pictures. It looks darker than I figured it would. That's one on my "wish list".

Very nice. I'd be interested in seeing how it photographs in the natural light.

I don't see you or your new kilt in the picture...
Have fun and throw far. In that order, too. - o1d_dude

Very nice Dale! Kilt is pretty sweet too. Looks a lot different than the advertised pics I've seen. Much better, actually.

Congrats on the new kilt. I like the way you rock that Stillwater leather jacket. It is quite rare (unique?) to see a leather jacket cut specifically for kilt wear, but it looks quite good

Hopefully it goes without saying that the fit of the kilt is perfect: This is the 3rd one Rocky has made for me. I'll post more shots once I can get some taken in natural daylight. There is something about the red threads going through the green that, at a little distance, makes that part of the sett look sort of brown; though when you're looking at it up close the combination of colors is a bit reminiscent of the USMC/Leatherneck tartan.
Enacted by legislation in 2001, the California Tartan recognizes the contributions to California by residents of Scottish ancestry. The legislation also stated that the official State Tartan may be claimed by any resident of the state.
The tartan is based on the Muir Clan tartan to honor the great naturalist John Muir. However, it is original enough to be registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority as California State District Tartan Number 200111 and with the Scottish Tartans Society as Tartan 2454.
The official State Tartan is described as a pattern or sett consisting of alternate squares of meadow green and pacific blue that are separated and surrounded by narrow charcoal bands. The squares of meadow green are divided by a gold seam that is supported by charcoal lines on each side. There are three redwood stripes, the middle of which is broader, that are added to each side of the gold seam. The pacific blue square is divided by a sky blue stripe, which is supported on each side by charcoal lines.
The tartan's blue reflects the sky, the ocean, and the state' s rivers and lakes, while the green stands for the state's mountains, fields, and parks. The red, gold, and blue seams signify the arts, sciences, agriculture, and industry of California.

For those who had difficulty seeing the kilt at all, the lass turned 23 last month and is a former student of mine. Joined the dojo when she was 18; only trained for a few months before school and work made it too hard to keep training, but we've remained friends. She's getting ready to move to San Diego for more school and wanted to see me again first, so I took her to dinner.
(BTW, Rocky also made the Douglas Grey kilt I'm wearing in the pic in this post, taken 4 weeks ago:

Apologies in advance to those who can't see that kilt very well either. )

Oh dear, the green-eyed monster is rearing its head now! Three of my favourite things in one night; a kilt, churrasco, and good company.
You are a very fortunate man, and that is a very nice kilt!
Congratulations!
That actually reminds me of the bombacha, the traditional loose trousers of the churrasco-making Southern Brazilian Gaśchos, and probably the second most comfortable article of clothing I own (after my kilt, of course).

Closer-up looks at the sett. Here's the kilt today, hanging on my door, outside in natural light but on an overcast day:

And a couple of minutes later, hanging on the inside of the same door, in strong artificial light:

Indoors, a little distance:

EDIT: The larger-file pics are being reproduced sideways here; but it's a symmetrical sett so that really doesn't matter.

Wow very nice tartan indeed. Wish the Ohio tartan looked nearly as nice. It is amazing how much of a difference there is in the color of the design based on the lighting involved.
