Rocky is the MAN! 5 yard wool Kilt Review
I had placed an order with another company in October for a 5 yard wool kilt in Bruce Modern tartan. Due to a very uncharacteristic snafu with this vendor I was 10 weeks out and found out that I most likely would have to wait until the end of February or begining of March for my kilt to arrive. The timetable was originally supposed to match the holidays and an important event for me.
I began wearing kilts because I compete in Heavy Athletics and because I just think they're cool. I bought a few of varying quality and even had a tartan registered and made into a kilt in honor of my Grandfather. Matt Newsome did a heck of a job on that.
But I never bought a "Bruce". It's strange because it is the only tartan, other than the one I created, that I actually have a clear blood linkage to. I just never saw a good example of the tartan in the kilts I was looking at. But I finally decided it was time to do so.
I took the opportunity to order from Rocky at USA kilts instead. A fellow caber thrower friend of mine wore his last season and I really liked the construction of it. So I called Rocky and asked if there was anyway he could do better on the timing for me.
He did. Not only THAT, but when he had heard that there may be a couple of days delay he CALLED ME! Now THAT is service! I mean, a couple of DAYS when I previously had a couple of months added to my timeline?
Here's my first impressions: WHY would I wear anything else in this weight and price range? 16 oz. 5 yard wool made to my specifications. Great weight, excellent workmanship and fits perfectly.
Yeah, I know, pictures right?

And the pleat shot:

Here is a picture of one of the embossed straps. Nice touch!

Rocky REALLY came through for me with a great product and great service. I'm kicking myself for not going to him sooner. I'm finding it hard to believe that my intent was to wear this to toss cabers in.
I wore it out and about today in some nice snowy weather. Lightweight enough not to pull at my hips, but dense enough to feel very comfortable.
Hmmmmm, Rocky, any plans on a Bruce Modern becoming available in PV?
Thanks for helping me out on this Rocky and the folks at USA Kilts. You won a customer.

I'm glad you're so pleased with it, DP.
In case anyone notices and is wondering, this is Lochcarron's Strome quality cloth, so the twill lines run opposite 'normal'. They're running //// in this picture where other companies will run \\\\\.
Now how about some pics of it being worn? It's only in the 30's outside. You can snap some pics.

Yeah, my first kilt was a premier 8-yarder (more like 7, I know, I know...) from Rocky. I would like to sample the artistry of other makers, but I find it hard to justify going somewhere else. The product, service, and overall value is...astounding. I also received a call from Rocky to verify measurements on my casual kilt because they didn't match those of my previous purchase. It's almost like USAKilts...appreciates its customers.
Congratulations! I'm feeling your satisfaction, and I like it!

DP: Congratulations on your beautiful new acquisition. Great looking kilt! - very striking, especially the pleats.
Rocky's right though. It would look even better with you in it, ... perhaps tossing the caber.
What a relief!! Those backwards twill lines were driving me crazy. I though maybe you were posting mirror images of your new kilt.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Though I'm not a fan of red, I really like the alternating stripes in the pleats. Now post up some action pics.

First, beautiful kilt. I love USAKs workmanship.
Second, I can't believe you got that to throw in either!!
I am waiting for Navy Edzell to return to the PV line...(hint, hint)

As it's a tartan with a surcharge (it's privately owned) and would be a custom weave (which makes the cloth even more expensive), the odds are slim... We did it once and it was expensive.

I love my wool 5 yarder from USA Kilts. It is a handsome garment that no one notices that it isn't an 8 yard kilt. If someone is looking for a particular wool tartan I can think of no finer and economical way to have a custom kilt in a family tartan than Rocky and Co.
I have to say that a photo of the kilt being worn would be a plus!

Re: Rocky is the MAN! 5 yard wool Kilt Review
Beautiful tartan!!
The workmanship, for me, sorta goes without saying.
I currently have four 5-yarders from Rocky, 3 in 16-oz fabric and one (US Army) 13-ouncer. No one ever notices they're not 8 yards and I wear them for everything from hiking in the boonies to fairly formal events. Given that the standard for the first century or so of kilt wear (if you include the feileadh mor) was around 4 yards of tartan, I've grown to feel that 8-yard kilts are just "gilding the lily" with excess pleatage.
Congrats on a fine and gorgeous kilt!!
