    Got my blue belt!

As many of you know, I am learning Shotokan karate. We now have an update to our website- particularly of the most recent tests for promotion, so I can show off some pictures.

This is me right after the presentation of belts:

    The students who tested:

The school is actually much larger, but our teacher won't allow us to test unless he thinks we're ready- and it takes a lot to prove to him that you're ready!

So- to be awarded your belt at this level, you have to take a hit from everyone in class, and either block or dodge it. If 2 or more get through, you don't get your promotion. This little guy got me"

This not so little guy did not!

    Presentation of my belt:

If anyone is interested, this is the school website- http://www.goldeneagleshotokan.com/

My goal is to eventually get my 3rd dan black belt so I can teach. With Justin, getting to where I am is one heck of an accomplishment. Of the students I started out with three and a half years ago, I'm all that's left. He's told me that he knows I'll make my black belt because I've got too much stubborn Scot in me to quit... I just wish I had started three years earlier, when he tried to get me to join! (He and I have been friends for about 6 years or so now.)

    Congratulations, Nighthawk.

I know it has nothing to do with Kung Fu, but this has evoked blissful memories of the TV series, Grasshopper. Now pick up the castiron kettle of boiling oil with your wrists and carry it over there.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Ted, you have no idea how funny that actually is! My friend looks so much Mr. Miagi that it's actually rather comical.

Now look at the picture of the sensei on the left. Tell me he's not a dead ringer for Pat Morita!

Still no! All the lower belts are now looking up to me- and want to take shots at me! When we spar in class, it's like everyone lines up to try their hand at getting me! One student tried a roundhouse kick at me. It was perfect! My block of it was equally perfect... and knocked her on her butt and left two elbow sized bruises on her leg- one above her knee, and one below it. I felt so bad... I quite get used to being the role model! I have started noticing the other students picking up my habits, so I have had to step things up a little in the last couple weeks. It's weird...

Now I've got the theme song from Happy Days, "Rock Around the Clock," stuck in my head, Nighthawk...
