    Happy Birthday Robert Lewis Stevenson

Today Is the 160 Birthday Of the beloved Scottish author and poet Robert Louis Stevenson. I think my FIRST introduction to Scottish culture was watching the movie David Balfour. I also remember memorizing his poetry in Grade school along with acting in plays, roles from his stories. Happy Birthday Robert Louis Stevenson.

    Thanks, Matt!

I wondered what this was about today.

Happy Birthday to a truly international Scot.

For that is the mark of the Scots of all classes: that he stands in an attitude
towards the past unthinkable to Englishmen, and remembers and cherishes the memory of his forebears, good or bad. And there burns alive in him a sense of identity with the dead even to the twentieth generation."
    ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

Kidnapped- defined the Scots in the minds of readers for generations, still does. To this day I won't go up darkened stairs in a relative's house, I mean not if they tell me to.

Treasure Island - Long John Silver defined pirates for all time, of course with a little carpet-chewing help from British actor Robert Newton. Har harrrr Jim Lad!

The Wrong Box - funniest single book ever written.

Travels With a Donkey - one of the best foot-travel books ever.

The Lamplighter and The Land of Counterpane - most gently evocative poems about childhood illness ever written in English:
