July 1 - Celebrating 150 Years of Canada

On July 1, Canada will be 150 years old as a nation. I'm a proud Canadian, celebrating with enthusiasm.

Did you know that Canada was "born" at "Downton Abbey"?

Congratulations. All my cousins, bar one, are Canadians. I just missed out. My father worked for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan at Gananoque Ontario and later at Penhold Alberta. He sustained a head injury in 1943. The exigencies of wartime resulted in him being shipped to England later that year to work on the salvage crews. There he met with my mother, whose aunt and uncles had all already emigrated to Canada while she stayed behind with her own parents. After I was born here in Scotland, my parents talked regularly of moving to Canada but nothing came of it. I have visited family in Canada five times and hope to be back again next year.

No, I did not! Thank you for that little trivia and an interesting piece of the puzzle.

I hope we (that country south of yours) remain neighbors you can rely on for another 150 years. Happy Birthday Canada.

    Thank you, Alan. Most interesting!

To complete the puzzle the 4th Earl of Carnarvan was the Secretary of State for the Colonies in the British cabinet during the 1860s, and therefore would have been involved in the negotiations around Confederation.

And for the record, can I just say that I am really glad the new nation was not named Guefeleland! The forevermore Canadians would have been known around the world as "Guefs".
