Memorial Day 2014
Today is Memorial Day in the United States. It's an opportunity to remember those who died in service to our country.
On my mind today are three Marines that I was honored to know:
David Smith

Nick Madrazo

Chris Hrbek

Thank you for giving everything you had, and everything you were ever going to have...

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them.
May their souls and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

My parents were both in the US Army. Although they did not die in the service of their country, they served and are remembered both for their military service and on a personal front as my family. My father spent 34 years in the Army, and saw action in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. My mother was a surgical nurse in the Army Nurse Corps during WWII, and she served in field hospitals in England, France and Belgium. I miss them very much.

Among those that I reflect upon today is a very dear Native Elder, Mentor and interTribal relative of mine.....he was the most decorated Native American Veteran to be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. His write up, in honor of his service, reads like a movie in the making......I miss you Sam, and will always honor you my friend. Note - All the years I was together around Sam, we spoke occasionally of our experiences while in service and the challenges we faced, but it was not until his passing did I realize the true extent of his service to country and to that of his Indigenous Nation. Rest well Sam, you have earned it Warrior....

May the stars carry your sadness away,
May the flowers fill your heart with beauty,
May hope forever wipe away your tears,
And, above all, may silence make you strong.
Chief Dan George
This quote has been comforting to me, brother.
