    EANABs - Share your recipes

I just came across a really good article on one of the social blogs (Jezabel) that talked about having a sober social life... One of the tips offered in the article was about EANABs (Equally Attractive Non-Alcoholic Beverages).

So here's your chance to share your favourite unleaded drink recipes... Extra points for creativity! As always, I'll start off with the first one.

    Jamaican Tea
    ---------------
    Earl Grey Tea (teabag)
    Apple juice
    Water
    Lemon juice & Lemon wedge
    Cinnamon stick
    sugar (optional)

Heat the apple juice to about 95C, and steep the Earl Grey teabag in the piping hot apple juice (instead of regular water).

If the resulting drink is too strong, dilute with a bit of water.

Add a touch of lemon juice; sweeten to taste.

Garnish with lemon wedge and/or cinnamon stick

    Enjoy.

Variation: May also be served as iced tea rather than hot.

    Background:

My reason for posting this, in case someone is curious. Some of the rabble may remember that last year at about this time I asked for some advice on how to hold a Thanksgiving party with my friends with the focus not being around getting drunk. At the time it was a significant issue. In the end, the party was a huge success.

I was the bartender, and any guest who wanted to drink had to pre-order their beverages prior to the party, and they would be supplied to them at the event. I did not impose any limits on how much they could order, but the fact that they had to reveal their intentions ahead of time made everyone very conscious of their consumption, and everyone ordered a reasonable amount... MANY people actually (even those who normally DO drink alcohol) opted not to drink at all that evening.

We will likely be doing the same thing this year too... And with an added emphasis on EANABs

From time to time I flavor a cup of the extremely strong, black coffee I usually drink with... a spoonful of peanut butter: smooth peanut butter, of course.

I make holly tea on occasion, as well. Usually just in the coffee machine with a little mint or rosemary added, but I have Yaupon holly plants.
    * Edit:

I just noticed a social life is required... Never mind.

Grated ginger, lime juice, and muddled basil with seltzer water... I refer to it as Thai water (as Thai flavors strongly influenced the drink)

For the most part, if I'm not drinking alcohol or still water I'm drinking carbonated water with citrus.

You can use the same mulling spices used in wine or wassail to make a tasty mulled apple cider or mulled hot apple cider. The hot version is great when the weather is cold.

I hope you aren't kidding, because that actually sounds very yummy. Going to have to try this soon!

Before I couldn't have gluten, one of my favorite drinks was barley tea. Now, I really like ginger tea. Just hot water and dissolve a couple of chewy ginger candies from the asian market in it.

No. I was not kidding at all. It makes a little bit of a mess in the cup and you might also want to keep the spoon handy if there's leftover peanut butter. You can add as much peanut butter as you wish, though.

I've also been known to put a spoonful or two of yoghurt into fruit juice. It doesn't seem to go to well with citrus, though. I don't think that's too weird for someone who has no social life?

I'm rather anti-social, so there must be something to that! I'm going to have to try the PB with hot cocoa too... a liquid peanut butter cup. I love peanut butter. I really love it on pizza... not much, just a few drizzles.

I'm not into yogurt or fruit juice though. Might give the two together a try though, just to see.

The acid in citrus juices will make the yogurt coagulate even more than it already is.

I like to make a "Cordless Screwdriver":
    2 parts orange juice
    1 part Pepsi

It looks "usgusting", as my niece used to say, but it's pretty tasty.

Ice, a shot of grenadine, a couple three lime wedges well squeezed over the ice, then fill the glass with tonic water. Kind of a cherry limeade with a bite.

I have almost 23 years clean and sober. My experience during those 23 years is that we who are trying to walk the straight and narrow in a very dangerous world have several lists of things we should not do, places we should not go and things we should not ingest.
Stay away from bars. Don't go in to shoot pool or to socialize all the while drinking cokes or virgin marys or some such. Anything can and will remind you of how great that beer tasted or how smokey that single malt felt moving over the tongue. Stay away from rowdy parties. Drinks that remind you of drinking are invitations to drink. Reproducing the actions that led to doing a line will lead you to that line.
Stay out of bars and other squeeky areas. The bottom line is one doesn't go into a house of ill repute just for a kiss.
Remember this is aimed at those who have decided they cannot drink or do again. For thos normies out there-do your thing.
