    Favourite Variety of Potato

I'm in a silly mood today and felt like putting up a silly poll. (Well, maybe not SO silly -- does anyone have any killer potato recipes they want to share?)

What's your favourite variety of potato and why?

I can't decide which type I like the best, so I second your "other" vote for vodka!

The Sweet Potato*, or Yams** as we call them around here, are of course the ultimate root vegetable! Not only tasty as a vegetable, but have edible greens and pretty flowers as well. I love me some Yams!

*'Sweet Potatoes' are "root vegetables" like carrots, they're only distantly related to regular potatoes which are "tubers".

**they are not really "Yams" either, Yams are herbaceous vines cultivated for the consumption of their starchy tubers in Africa and Asia.

What Zardoz said. Yams are not really potatoes.

In the Uk all on offer in the poll look very unfamiliar apart from the 'Sweet Potato'

My favourite potato is 'Maris Piper' for good roasts and 'King Edward' as a general one.

I don't know what they use for Vodka but I'll go for that whatever it is, as long as pourable and comes in a bottle!

I vote for Rooster, a great Irish variety that roasts really well. And have you heard that Tyrrell's uses their odd sized potatoes that are no good for crisps to make this?

    Russet Burbank.

Who couldn't love a potato that has a name like a 70's porn star.
