Great, just great!
My wife, coming back from a business trip in London, stopped by the duty free shop before boarding her flight. She knows I love the peaty Scotch, and thinking of me, bought:
Great, just great! I'll never be able to drink it because it's so special!
Thank you to my wonderful and lovely wife.

I think you are obligated to drink it and to enjoy the experience, so you do not insult your wife. Putting it on the shelf would be the same as hiding a gift that you don't like but must keep on hand just in case the giver asks about it! Besides, if you really let her kow how much you like it, she might buy another!

Now THAT is a thoughtful wife you have there. Her taste in Whisky is excellent to boot.
You really do have a duty to open and enjoy it.

You are absolutely right...I owe it to my wife to drink this special Scotch. Now I need to plan an occasion to do so.

chewsy - do you have some 15 yr to compare to? It was different than the 10 yr and smoother, the smoke gets more intense. Can only guess about another decade in the cask in the salt spray. Yum.

First rule of etiquette for gift recieving is that you are obliged to, at least once in the presence of the giver and typically at the soonest opportunity, use/wear/display/imbibe/partake of whatever gift was recieved. I would say you have plenty of reason and opportunity to open and partake of that fine whisky at your earliest convenience. Enjoy for all of us.
