Haggis

I know I'm starting early, but we always have a Burns Night session with our cubs and I want to get organised so its not a last minute scramble like this year...ok, it was a success, but...

I'm trying to put a list together of different haggis to buy and so far have 4:

1. Macsweens;
2. Blackface;
3. Waitrose;
4. Macsweens vegetarian.

I know, my god mother would be horrified at no. 4, but we have a couple of vegetarians and a muslim, so have to cater for them as well.

What other brands are worth, and not worth, considering?

Ok, so I used to be a chef and want to educate their palettes and let them try the best, the mediocre and a "Don't ever even think about that one!", so they learn what quality food REALLY means.

Let the arguments begin!

I don't see how you'd have to do anything different for a Muslim. They are allowed sheep and all the parts. I make my own either by hunting (venison or hog) or buying the parts directly from the slaughter house (sheep or beef). As for vegetarian, I can't help you. As a chef maybe you could improvise a vegetarian haggis.

I can attest that Caledonian Kitchen is very good quality. (My personal favorite is their Highland Beef version. The vegetarian/vegan version is also surprisingly palatable, though with a detectable flavor of soy sauce.) Being in the U.K. though, you may want to go with something produced on your own island.

I con understand the concern with the muslim as I'm quite sure that Haggis are not necessarily Halal but the MacSweens vegetarian one is a good call.

Now I'm trying to rake my brain for what else in available...of course having lived in Scotland for almost a decade there are so many local varieties that I have tried, but I'm thinking of what is availale over the shelf (and not in a tin).

To think of those poor Haggis running free and then sold in a cylindrical tomb

I frequently have the MacSweens Veggie one, and like it very much, my friends who are meat eaters are also fairly content with it as well, so as a general haggis for everyone, it might fit the bill. I'm a regular Waitrose customer and am not aware of their "own label" one, I thought it was just the Macsween one, but I could be wrong.

My wifes a vegie and we eat the mcsweens all the time, however to trully enjoy haggis in its finest form it should be used as a pizza topping my local place does a "Braveheart" that has chillies as well but tesco do a haggis pizza made by cosmo, yum yum yum
